Advantages: Extremely healthy and delicious

Disadvantages: You may want to eat more

If you are anything like me then I am not a great lover of tuna, ok, I like it but I am not too keen on plain tuna. I find it pretty dry, bland and boring. I need to have my tuna dressed in some kind of sauce or spiced up and I don?t always have the time to mess about in the kitchen making up a sauce.

I also get bored with my packed lunches since starting my diet ? I have totally stayed clear of our gorgeous company restaurant food ? too many calories but oh, so lovely. I also need to prepare something that is quick ? I hate organising my lunch on the previous evening as I like my food as fresh as possible ?on the day?. I just hate soggy sandwiches which have been prepared 16 hours previously!

A few weeks ago whilst at my weekly Slimming World class our consultant, John, told us that Princes had teamed up with Slimming World and had produced a new range of tasty, ready to eat tuna. He had arranged a lovely display of tins and pouches of Princes Slimming World tuna + crackers and we were invited to taste the various selections.

Now my class starts at 7pm on a Wednesday night and I am usually starving by the time I get there and so this light refreshment was very welcome indeed. I duly picked up some crackers and tried all the variations. I was very impressed.

We had the choice of the following dressings:-

Red Chilli & Lime
Tikka
Lime & Black Pepper
Light Lemon Mayonnaise

The light lemon mayonnaise gives just a nice lightness to the tuna but some people thought it was a bit ?sickly? whereas the red chilli and lime has a very distinct, strong flavour which actually had, what I call, ?a bite? to it. The lime and black pepper is quite a weird kind of taste. I love lime but, in hindsight, wasn?t too keen to mix the flavour with tuna. I found my tongue kept licking my lips and my mind was asking the question ?do I like this flavour??. The lime and black pepper just doesn?t seem to be gel with the tuna. The f
lavour I really love and adore is tikka. It is nice and creamy and not too spicy. It has the look of korma rather than the redness of tikka and brings a little of India into your life!

The tuna is flaked and so it is easy to spread onto your bread or crackers. It is also ideal as a topping for a baked potato or mixed with pasta. It is really quite a versatile product.

It is available in 85g pouches which cost 70p and the canned varieties cost approximately £1.19 for 2 x 80g cans. I have since found out that they have also produced a 160g can but I haven?t seen it yet in the supermarkets. The typical values per 100g product are 135kcal with 0.7g saturated fat content.

The 85g foil pouch is ideal for a single serving as is the 80g. The product can be served straight from the pack which makes it so easy to enjoy a healthy balanced diet and for a busy person like myself ? well, it just saves so much time. I often take a couple of 80g tins to work and keep them in my desk with a small packet of crackers (and a small knife) and if I feel peckish then I can just whip off the ring-pull lid and have a lovely, quick, filling light snack. Always observing firstly that the boss is out of sight! Well, he might want some too!

These cans are handy to take on a picnic, just pop them into your cool box.

I personally think that it is cheaper to buy the 2 x 80g cans at £1.19 rather than say buying 2 x 85g foil pouch which would cost £1.40. The 21p difference is better kept in my pocket!

Now we all know that we should eat our 5 portions of fruit and vegetables each day and should eat 2 portions of fish each week. Dressing the tuna in this way can help us quite easily eat one of those fish portions each week.

Lean protein, vitamins and mineral are all found in tuna. It can also help lower blood pressure and cholesterol. Research has shown that omega-3 fatty acids, found in abundance in fatty fish like tuna can help lower the
risk of heart disease, ease the pain of arthritis, reduce asthma complications, and is essential in the growth and development of young children.

So it is important that we encourage our children to eat tuna and what better way of enticement than to give them Princes Slimming World range of tuna!

Princes have developed the dressings so that they are low in fat but healthy at the same time.

Here is a recipe which I have copied from a leaflet/money off voucher which I was given at my Slimming World class.

Brown Rice Pilau with Lentil and Tuna Tikka

Serves: 4
Make and cook time: approx. 50 minutes plus standing

Syns per serving:
Green: Free if using tuna as a Healthy Extra

The Princes Slimming World Tuna range is available in all the major supermarkets.
Ingredients:
8oz / 227g brown basmati rice
4oz / 113g red lentils
1 onion
1 medium aubergine
400g can chopped tomatoes with garlic
2 tsp medium curry powder
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
6oz / 170g frozen peas
4 x 80g cans Princes Tuna in a Tikka Dressing
2 tbsp freshly chopped coriander

Rinse the rice and lentils in a sieve, under cold running water, until it runs clear. Shake well to drain and place in a large saucepan. Set aside.
Peel and chop the onion. Trim the aubergine and cut into small pieces. Place in the saucepan with the rice and lentils, and add the chopped tomatoes, curry powder and seasoning. Pour over 1pt / 568ml cold water and mix well. Bring to the boil, cover and simmer gently for about 25 minutes until the liquid is almost absorbed and the rice and lentils are tender. Stir in the frozen peas. Remove from the heat, cover and stand for 10 minutes. Serve with the Tikka tuna.
For Slimming World Ciao-ers ? these are the ?Syn? values:

Original: 1.5 syns per 80g can
Green: 5.5 syns per 80g can

Princes also state that the tuna is dolphin friendly.

An interesting fact on the outer packaging of the 2 x 80g cans is that this is a product of Thailand.

Tuna Trivia

Did you know that the liver of most tunas yields an oil that is often used in the processing of leather?
