Tinned tuna is an absolute staple in our house as my other half absolutely loves tuna mayonnaise and the like; he often takes it to his work with him for his lunch. Because we go through so much of it, I tend to try and buy it in bulk, as it usually works out to be a lot cheaper than buying individual cans as and when we need them.

I usually buy supermarket own branded tins of tuna in brine, but at times there is a reasonable enough offer on a well-known brand of tinned tuna that will entice me to buy it and give it a try. I am not really loyal to any one brand in particular; I just tend to opt for whatever is offering the best value at the time.

It was whilst I was in my local Farmfoods frozen food store recently that I noticed they were selling 'Princes' branded tinned tuna.

I have bought tuna from Farmfoods before and find that it is ok for using in cooking or pasta dishes, but it is not the best quality for using on sandwiches and things, which puts me off from buying it now. That said, the tinned tuna I have purchased from Farmfoods in the past is their own brand, and costs just under 40 pence for a can, so one would hardly expect it to contain the highest quality tuna fish.

The Princes tinned tuna chunks cost 55 pence, which seemed reasonable. I ascertained immediately from the label on the can that the Princes brand of tuna was 'dolphin friendly' which is the only type of tinned tuna that I will allow in my house. In the end I decided to give it a trial, as it seemed like a fairly good bargain.

I was making my partner's lunch later the same week and decided to use the Princes tuna chunks rather than either of the other two tins I had in the cupboard at that time. Opening the can with my tin opener (there is no ring pull on the top of the tin), I was aware immediately that there was a huge amount of brine in the tin as it was squirting all over the kitchen (and me).

The appearance of the tinned tuna was reasonably appetising looking on the whole, although I was aware that there were a few black bits in the midst of the chunks that I had to pick out and discard.

The tuna chunks were very 'meaty' looking though, which is the main difference I usually find between a product like this and one that is sold in 'flakes'. After mashing the chunks with a fork and adding mayonnaise and some seasoning, it did appear to be a very tasty-looking sandwich filling indeed.

There was a little left over so I opted to have this on some crackerbread for my own lunch later in the day. I found that the chunks were indeed very meaty in texture, though this was not off-putting for me at all.

The tuna fish had a nice taste to it and I didn't find it to be overly salty as a result of the brine it had been soaking in, which has been the case with cheaper brands of tinned tuna that I have used before.

All in all I did rather enjoy my snack although I didn't find this tuna to be much better or worse than any other brand that I buy regularly, so I'm not sure if I would go out of my way to buy it again. That said, if I had ran out and this was the only brand available, I would have no problem with using this.

The tin of Tuna Chunks in Brine is 185g in weight, but the label conveniently informs me that the drained weight will be less - 130g in fact. I will also point out that the tin I bought is not as 'tall' as the one in the pictureon the Dooyoo page.

The nutritional information on the side of the can informs me that 100g of the drained tuna fish will provide me with 105 calories and 0.5g fat, which I thought was very reasonable.

I will deduct one star because of the black bits (skin?) that were among the chunks of tuna fish, as they were inconvenient to remove and they looked really horrible. There was only a couple of these though. Apart from that, I was quite impressed with this and would recommend it fairly highly.

Four stars for this fishy wishy! :-D

Summary: Would buy it again :-)

The black bits would put me off buying it ever again.
