Advantages: Very quick to make - no need for pan!
Disadvantages: Not the best tasting porridge I've had
I hated porridge as a child. However, I've grown up and learnt to appreciate this simple and quick morning meal. Even better that Quaker Oats, Oat So Simple, comes in handy little packets for quick dump in a microwave to cook action.
I got my box of 12 sachets from Tesco for just under £2.
Packaging:
The box has a photo of a wheat field with a massive label on the front saying "Now Only 2 minutes to Perfect Porridge". This is the crux of their marketing - the fact that it can cater for those who view sleep to be far more important than time eating in the morning, those that are like me!
The box opens from the top to reveal 12 sachets, each containing 27g of rolled oats. I usually stand my box upright, with the opening facing the front for ease of just reaching and grabbing in the morning.
The sachets all have instructions for cooking, although I don't bother with this. Just rip open the packet, pour it in a microwave-safe bowl, pour on some milk (just over under half of the bowl) and dump in the microwave for one minute. When that is up, stir and add more milk. Heat up for another minute and this should be it. I find this process to be best for making porridge rather than blasting the bowl for 2 minutes straight - you tend to get a rim forming at the top of the porridge and a soggy centre, with some uncooked oats - not good, especially when you're hungry and just want to get out of the house in the morning.
Taste:
I always use semi-skim milk as I find full fat too creamy and skimmed milk too watery. The porridge made from each sachet is a good amount, it's always more than I can eat although, when I'm particularly famished, I can finish a whole bowl.
The oats cook very well and fluff up nicely, giving them a good bit to them without tasting too soggy. The porridge itself is very creamy and of course, if you use full fat milk it would be even creamier.
Endurance:
With one bowl of porridge, I can go without eating beyond lunch time (a good 3-4 hours after breakfast).
Overall:
Although, it's not the best porridge oats I have tasted, there is nothing unpleasant about these. They've made making the porridge so simple that it's made porridge an attractive breakfast to those that can't wait to get out of the house in the morning.
Oat So Simple also comes in Apple & Blueberry flavour, Raspberry flavour and Golden Syrup flavour.
Summary: Super quick and handy sachets

- 11/06/09 I love these! Strangely, I also stir and add some more milk half way through too! |
