Advantages: Taste Yummy
Disadvantages: Expensive
The power of the media mainly television and of course extremely cute advertising has a huge sway with my little boy. I have come to realise that certainly over the last couple of years or so it really doesn't matter what something might taste like. It depends on whether or not it looks cool in the eyes of a six year old boy and his peers. In all honesty brand power certainly doesn't hold too much sway in our family as I tend to put my own spin on things while cooking from scratch, however when using things like tomato ketchup, or beans for example nothing comes close to the taste of the Heinz variety. In my opinion and I have tried several makes of this product over the years. Sugar puffs don't taste like sugar puffs unless they are made by Quaker. (well actually they have been taken over a couple of years ago by honey monster foods the recipe is the same though).
Sugar puffs are around £1.79 for a 450g box. They come in a royal blue coloured packet, which has a cute picture of the honey 'monster' in his trademark red jumper on the front pouring milk onto a bowl full of the lovely little puffs. The sugar puffs logo is prominently displayed in red. There is also Guideline daily amounts explained, product ingredients and nutritional information and a quality promise from the manufacturers. The inner packaging is the usual plastic type bag which contains the product inside that you get with most cereals these days. The top of the box flips open easily, you just slide your finger gently under the centre flap. Once used and to retain freshness, roll down the inner and insert the tab under the flap to close.
Sugar puffs are basically little puffs of natural wheat, which are glazed with honey and brown sugar. They are fortified with vitamins and iron and contain no artificial colours or preservatives. In addition they are a source of fibre which are also low In fat and contain no added salt. I have to confess I haven't had these for a while however for the purposes of research I had a bowl. They have a very distinctive wheat smell when initially tipped out of the box which is rather pleasant. They taste lovely with ice-cold milk poured over the top of them. I prefer to eat them as soon as this happens otherwise they soak up the milk and become soggy and unpleasant. I have to say though that my son prefers then soggy. He also likes eating them without milk and straight from the packet as a dry snack!!! Each to their own I suppose. You can definitely taste the honey through-out this cereal. I have to say that they are extremely sweet much more so than I remembered from the past however generally quite delicious really with an added crunch.
Overall verdict I have to say they were very yummy however I poured myself a bowl and still felt hungry after eating them (It was a large bowl too!!). This made me think about whether I was giving my son enough fuel in the mornings to see him through to snack time at school. I suppose though he also has toast too so I felt a bit better about it then. I would recommend these for an occasional treat as they currently are now. While my son likes porridge I tend to try and encourage this more. In terms of value for money I think that there are better products out there however I will certainly be buying these again as they are tasty.
