Advantages: Tasty, convenient, very healthy and easy to use, nice with sweet potato mash
Disadvantages: Could be considered expensive, a little bland if eaten on their own
Quorn Peppered Steaks are a great product from the Quorn range which I regularly use as my husband is a veggie. I actually find these are great for me on a low fat diet too as they are very low in saturated fat.
These quorn steaks are in the style of peppered beef steak and although I would never claim that they taste anything like the real thing, they are very tasty as a product in their own right and are wonderfully filling and convenient, being quick and easy to cook.
Each steak contains only 107 calories and 0.5g of saturated fat which equates to 1.5 weight watchers points per steak. Each steak is roughly the size of a small beef steak but looks like the textured protein that it actually is. There is obvious peppercorn seasoning sprinkled over the top of each steak and it is textured to resemble a chargrilled finish.
I have found that these 'steaks' are particularly tasty with a sweet potato mash on the side, the sweetness of this side dish works well with the peppercorn seasoning on the steak. Overall I do think you need to eat these with something else as they are, at the end of the day, pretty bland micro-protein and only really taste of the seasoning.
You can cook these in a conventional oven and they take around 20 minutes from chilled, you can also fry or grill them and they do not take long to heat through. I buy mine from Asda but I have also seen them in Sainsburys and Tesco and they range between being £1.50 a pack (of two) when on special offer to around £2.15 full price.
If you are veggetarian or live with with one I would highly recommend that you give these a go, although many people seem to have issue with non-meat products which are seemingly trying to imitate meat, I would say that these are simply a versatile, tasty and healthy meat alternative and does not bear much resemblance at all to the meat product it is supposedly a substitute for!
Another great, reliable product from the Quorn range, without which I sometimes think I would be lost for meal ideas!
Summary: A useful and adaptable veggie product from the fantastic quorn range

- 17/08/09 I really love these, they taste lovely and peppery but have none of that grease that grill steaks have. Donna x |
