Advantages: Good alternative to bacon
Disadvantages: Never going to be quite as good
I think I'm a lot like many other vegetarians in that the only thing that really tests my resolve is the smell of bacon sizzling away in a frying pan. If I were to weaken and have one day of eating meat, I think that day would most certainly begin with a bacon sandwich - thick white crusty bread, crispy bacon and lashings of yummy tommy k...mmmmmmmmm. But that's not going to happen so I have to try and recreate this dream meal with vegetarian alternatives.
I had tried other brand of fake bacon before and always been really dissappointed, ignoring their awful appearance they all had a really strong taste of flavourings which was completely overpowering. I decided to give the Quorn Bacon Style rashers a try as I had tried quite a few of the other Quorn products and have been quite impressed with the taste.
I use Tesco's for my food shop and I found the Quorn rashers in the freezer section with the rest of the meat free product. The price is £1.62 for a 150g box. The packaging features the distinctive Quorn logo and an image of the product cooked and served up with some scrambled egg. It looks delicious and I was hoping it would look as appealing when I cooked it up. The box is alsoquite compact and this is good as the box doesn't take up too much room in your freezer.
Upon opening the box you will see that the product itself comes in pale strips and they are usually all stuck together. I would advise against trying to seperate them straight out the freezer as they may well snap and instead wait a few minutes and then you should be able to pull them apart easily. They really don't look all that great when they are frozen, they are very pale and bland looking and look absolutely nothing like bacon.
You can cook the Quorn rashers in a few different ways but have found that grilling them produces the best results. They really don't take very long though so I would move too far away from the grill. I would say that they are nicely cooked after 3-4 minutes but each to their own, some do like their bacon really crispy!
Tastewise, it certainly does have a bacon flavour but it is a long way from real bacon in terms of texture and taste. The flavour is quite strong and it is almost as though they are trying a little too hard. Having said that it is a product I enjoy and I think that it does taste good in a butty with ketchup and it also is really good with scrambled egg. I also really enjoy it in a sandwich with lettuce, tomato and mayo.
It is not something I keep in the freezer all the time but every now and the when i fancy a fry up, it does the job and I no longer mine for my husbands real bacon quite so much.
Summary: Good effort from Quorn to achieve the impossible

- 24/04/09 I used to love the Morning Star ones, but they stopped selling them in the UK. They could be microwaved too - I'm lazy in the morning. |
