Advantages: A tasty versatile vegetarian food
Disadvantages: Why does it always have to imitate meat?
On my personal journey to becoming a vegetarian one of the first things I gave up eating was pig flesh. This was after seeing a documentary on the way pigs were treated and slaughtered as well as visiting a few grotesque pig farms. Therefore eating a product that pretends to be a pork substitute always gives me mixed feelings and I often wonder why do food manufacturers continually insist on reproducing meat flavoured products for vegetarians.
Quorn as I am sure everyone should know by now is a micro protein derived from a type of fungi. It was developed as a high in protein food that could be eaten as an alternative to meat. Because of the high protein content and the fact that it contains so little fat, it is marketed as a healthy food. However, it should not be forgotten that it is in essence a highly processed food that one would be hard pushed to declare as a natural substance. Nevertheless, it's nice for vegetarians to have some alternative to Soya based products.
Quorn Bacon Style Rashers can be grilled or fried depending on which you prefer. They are in my mind the most artificial looking of all the Quorn products appearing as flat rectangular pink and white strips. The taste of any Quorn food all comes down to the added spices and flavourings. Although far from being identical to bacon these Rashers do capture something of the smoky bacon flavour, not an exact reproduction but a kind of fading memory of something you once ate a long time ago. They fit nicely into the traditional style vegetarian English breakfast alongside baked beans, waffles, fried tomatoes, brown sauce etc. You can also stick them on a butty. You do need some kind of sauce or liquid dressing as these rashers are really quite dry.
Although suitable for vegetarians those from the planet Vegan should be warned that these are not vegan friendly as they contain egg-whites (shock horror!).
These Quorn Bacon Style Rashers are a good source of protein and fibre. They contain less than 2% saturated fat (probably from the egg white) and only 74 calories per serving. In total a serving will give you 6g of fat.
Other ingredients: Mycoprotein (55%), Rapeseed Oil, Flavourings (with Colour: Iron Oxides; Smoke Flavouring), Water, Dried Free Range Egg White, Gelling Agents: Locust Bean & Guar Gums, Humectant: Glycerine, Dextrose.
A 150g box will set you back £1.99 at Tesco.
Summary: Bacon style Quorn.
