Advantages: Low fat, high protein

Disadvantages: No taste of its own

When I was about fifteen, I did what a lot of teenagers do and became vegetarian. It didn't last long - I liked bacon sandwiches too much - but while I was a veggie my mum used to give me Quorn pieces. When I was in the supermarket a few weeks ago there was a special offer on Quorn pieces (now re-labelled Chicken Style Pieces, as they also have Beef Mince Style Quorn as well) and I thought I'd give them another go.

If you've not tried Quorn before, it is a low fat, high protein vegetarian alternative to meat made from mycoprotein - a member of the fungi family. Quorn doesn't taste of mushrooms though, in fact it doesn't really taste of anything, but it can be used in place of meat in recipes. The texture is similar to that of chicken breasts, only slightly more moist.

Because Quorn has no taste of it's own it is best used in recipes like stir fries and curries. Another way to serve it is to pour a marinade sauce over it, wrap it loosely in foil and cook in the oven for twenty minutes.

Quorn can be found in the freezer section of most supermarkets and the Chicken Style Pieces retail for about £1.90 for a 300g bag, although Tesco were doing a 2 bags for £3 offer recently.

There are many other items in the Quorn range, like burgers, escallopes, cottage pie and veggie bakes. I've tried a few of these and they're all pretty nice.

I'd definitely recommend Quorn pieces to anyone looking to become vegetarian or just looking to find a healthier alternative to meat as it provides plenty of protein without the saturated fat. In fact the only downside is the fact that it has no taste of its own.

Summary: Worth trying if you're on a new year health drive

I'd agree it doesn't have 'much' flavour but all the quorn products are actually flavoured (I used to work with one of the companies that supplied the flavours - and v. good business it was as well)
