Advantages: Really versitile!
Disadvantages: Zilch
I stopped eating meat about 18 years ago when I was 13 years old, now I'm not sure if it was some kind of teenage rebellion but it is something I've kept up with. Believe me there's not much else I've stuck with for any length of time as I have very poor willpower.
Anyway when I first stopped eating meat I know my mum struggled to feed me alongside the rest of the family. She refused to cook me a completely different meal so most of the time I just have the same as them but without the meat. It made meal times rather bland but there really wasn't much choice out there for vegetarians. Thankfully things have progressed and the range of foods for vegetarians is pretty good, there is always a good choice on restaurant menus and you can now buy all manner of meat substitute products.
Quorn mince contains micro protein, a member of the mushroom family which is a great source of protein and a healthy alternative to meat. You find the quorn mince is the freezer section and is usually found alongside the rest of the Quorn products in the meat free section. I bought a 300g bag recently from my local Tesco's for £1.97 and I usually find that a bag lasts a couple of weeks.
What I love about this product is how completely versitile it is, it be used in a whole range of recipes and basically in any dish where you would use meat mince you can replace it with Quorn mince. It also soaks up flavour really well and you don't need to add all that much to create a really tasty and flavoursome dish.
I regularly use it in a whole range of dishes - spag bol, cottage pie, lasagne and chilli and it works really well. Generally I cook up a meat dish for my husband and two girls and then alongside I cook up a small quantity using the Quorn mince. It doesn't require a whole lot of extra effort and I enjoy that I am almost eating the same as the rest of my family. It's something that makes my life a whole lot easier.
Summary: A great alternative - try it
