Advantages: Healthier than red meat
Disadvantages: Could taste a bit nicer
I bought a frozen bag of Quorn mince a couple of weeks back on the recommendation of a work friend, but didn't get a chance to try it until last night.
Whilst I'm not a vegetarian, I'm a very fussy eater (I don't like meat that looks like meat - that means no bone, skin, rind or obvious fat). And I flat out refuse to cook raw meat, which is where the Quorn comes in.
The frozen bag seemed quite small, but then I realised just how many portions I'd get out of just over 300g, so it does seem quite good value for money to me.
Opening it, I assumed it would just look like mince, but in actual fact it was lots of tiny round pieces, like of like if you mashed mince up into bits. It was also grey in colour, so quite off-putting, but not so much as regular raw mince, I did have a brief moment of thinking what the hell am I doing, but then threw it in a pan with some veg to cook. The instructions on the pack say to cook it with sauce in a lidded pan and simmer. I stir fried mine though, because I don't have a pan with a lid! I mixed in some pasta sauce.
It didn't take that long to cook, and then I mixed it up with some pasta and gave it the taste test. The flavour was generally overpowered by the tomato and chilli pasta sauce, but I could taste the Quorn and it was quite pleasant. It doesn't have a strong a flavour as regular mince, but that's good for people like me who prefer the taste of carbs to protein anyway!
One think to note is that it is a bit mushroomy, so if you hate mushrooms this probably isn't for you.
Other than that, this a cheap, healthy alternative to red meat. I have a feeling this one bag will last me a very long time, and it's not my new favourite food or anything, but it's fairly good - no complaints really, except it could taste a little nicer!
Summary: A pretty good alternative to meat.
