Advantages: Low in fat, ok if smothered in gravy, easy to cook and carve

Disadvantages: Very bland and uninspiring

I find myself resorting to Quorn quite often because my husband is veggie. One of the hardest meals to recreate is the traditional Sunday roast and so we have tried to substitute with this a couple of times - and whilst it does make a passable lunch I am not overstruck on this particular Quorn product.

You will not always find this in the supermarket so I tend to buy one when I see it as you can guarantee you then wont find it again for weeks, it comes frozen in a thick sausage shape with tight plastic wrapped over and sealed at each end like a salami. The colour is that of standard quorn pieces, like a beige colour.

You oven cook the product and it generally needs about 45mins to an hour. Once cooked you just slice it into pieces to serve with your meal.

Taste wise, quorn on its own can be quite bland and that is my main criticism of this product. Uninspiring to say the least, even with gravy on its not really that tasty, I find if you eat it with stuffing in the same mouthful you could almost believe it was roast chicken but not really.

The plus points are that it is fantastically low in fat and so is a great option for anyone on a diet or watching their cholesterol. It is made of microprotein (as is the entire quorn range) and so is a good source of protein for non meat eaters.

Personally I keep one of these in the freezer as a failsafe incase I need to do a veggie roast at short notice, but there are other and better veggie substitutes which taste nicer in the context of a roast dinner, in my opinion.

This retails at around £2.49 but ive seen it for less on special offer. The strangest thing where I live is the inconsistency of availability across the big 4 supermarkets, some weeks none have it, some weeks all of them do but it rarely is stocked for many weeks at a time. I get the feeling its just not that popular a product.

I keep meaning to try marinading the roast before cooking it to see if it would perk it up a bit in terms of flavour, without doing so I have to say that it is pretty uninspiring to be honest!

Summary: A basic veggie roast but without the added excitement of nuts or any real flavour
