Advantages: Oh...they are the Bees Knees.
Disadvantages: Lots of calories.
Mars Revels must be a pretty popular choice for chocoholics, this statement is not based on fact but it is based on the knowledge that Revels are one sweet treat that I cannot ever seem to find in any of the discount stores.
If I buy a packet of Revels then inevitably it is on one of my rare visits to Blockbusters when I go to choose a DVD. Just beside the till they have an awesome selection of sweets in what they describe as `family bags`. Well, let me tell you, devouring a family bag of Revels proves to be quite easy !
The family bags have to be considered quite a treat because of the price but to buy a small bag is hardly the same, once you have just got started then you have just about finished.
I realise that the bag is supposed to contain a mixture that remains an enigma to us but when you become an experienced Revel eater that mystery becomes a myth, stick a finger in the bag and wiggle it around and you can tell what lays inside of the chocolate by the shape and size of the treat.
Most will shun a coffee cream but I welcome them with open arms, if anyone has any that are surplus to requirements then let me know!
The coffee cream has always been considered the black sheep of the family and it still remains so to this day.
If I had to pick the most boring of the bunch ( I hasten to add that in my opinion there is no such thing) it would have to be the Malteser. The Malteser is predictable and you can buy them by the box full if you so wish.
I am jubilant if I find an orange centre, the orange flavoured Revels are slightly larger than the others and if you give them a gentle squeeze they yield under the pressure of your fingertips.
The outer layer of chocolate is thick, sweet and very creamy and then you are totally ruined as your taste buds hit that tangy orange cream.
The toffee Revel reminds me of a Paynes Poppet, again a generous layer of sumptuous thick milk chocolate with a jaw breakingly tough ball of buttery toffee wrapped inside.
Personally I prefer to suck the toffee Revels, it makes life far easier.
The raisin Revel has been one of the latest additions to the pack and it is a star. I can tell the chocolate coated raisin a mile away, the whole shape is a complete give-away.
Every time I pop that particular chocolate into my mouth I live in hope that the inside is one of the freshest and plumpest that money can buy.
Last but certainly not least is that delicious naked Minstrel, it is like a gigantic chocolate button in disguise. I have developed a special technique for enjoying this one to the full, I place the aforementioned on my tongue and then I let it just sit there and melt. If you take your time that process can last for a long time and give oodles of pleasure.
If you are a chocolate connoisseur then a bag of Revels may offend your tender palette, they are basic centres that are made to satisfy the masses.
If like me you just love the idea of having a bag that is filled with different flavours then Revels will be right up your street.
There are nearly 500 calories in the small bag of Mars Revels so heaven only knows how many calories there are in a large `share` bag.
The small packet will set you back about 50p on average and if you decide to play the market and invest in a large bag then be prepared to part with upwards of £1.50 and more if you buy them at Blockbusters.
Summary: I could easily demolish a family bag in one go.
