Advantages: Individual Packaging

Disadvantages: A bit pricey and not as nice to taste as I thought they would be

In my never ending search for the perfect lunch box snack (that’s kid’s box of food, nothing to do with Linford Christie!) I came across these delightful little packets of chocolate covered rice crispy cakes.

Everyone will have tried a home made chocolate covered rice crispy cake at some time during their childhood I am sure – but these don’t really taste too much like the ones I remember, but they are still a pleasant and sweet snack which do not unbalance the diet too much from your kids point of view.

The whole concept of this packaging is different to the norm with its hexagonal shaped box. Inside are five separately wrapped “rubbles”. They are quite a generous size and I would say it is the equivalent to a jammy dodger biscuit although about twice as fat. The individual wrappers are slightly tricky to get open so if you have younger kids they may need help from a teacher to get into them.

Inside, the cake/biscuit/rubble itself, is made up of rice crispies and Fox’s rocky biscuit pieces, all mixed up with chocolate. They are moulded into a round cake shape and look quite appealing. The smell is typical to a chocolate covered biscuit. Think Penguins or Breakaway and you will be along the right lines although you can also detect the rice crispy smell as well.

The taste test was done by me and the kids to make it impartial. I love all things chocolate and may have given false star rating if left to my own devices. My kids are 5 and 2 and I have to say I didn’t think the 2 year old would like it so much due to the texture but she ate the lot and asked for more. My 5 year old ate it without comment and from this I presume he would be happy to have it in his lunch box next week.

For me the experience was a little different. When you first bite into them I found the texture very rough. I know they are made from rice crispies but this kind of hurt the roof of my mouth as my teeth closed onto it. Once the piece was in my mouth, the flavour that comes through the most is the chocolate. I found it similar in taste to the chocolate taste in a Blue Ribbon wafer biscuit. Nowhere near as good as a Cadbury chocolate bar. The taste is a little bitter and the chocolate itself, while I am sure it is milk chocolate, is darker than I would have liked.

The rice crispies stay crunchy throughout and although this was unappealing in the first bite, due to the scraping on the roof of my mouth, this was actually quite nice when chewing it. The biscuit pieces were not really detectable in terms of taste so much but more so in texture. You could tell they were there when chewing but not really apparent in their flavour. Maybe it could do with having more biscuit pieces in there. It does leave an after taste too of the chocolate flavour and this is not so nice in my opinion. My kids didn’t complain but maybe that was because they were too busy chucking blackcurrant down their throats to realise there was an aftertaste. Maybe they made them thirsty?

Nothing really crumbled apart when I was eating it so this is a bonus for the kids, especially for their lunch boxes as the least mess in school the better.

In each biscuit you will be giving your kids 97 calories and 4.1g of fat. I think this is OK for part of a lunch box as long as other healthier things are included to keep it balanced. These will be suitable for vegetarians but they are an allergy sufferers nightmare, with practically every major allergy inducing ingredient in them.

At 99p for a box of 5, they are not the cheapest option, especially if you have more than one child needing a lunch box, as we do.

Overall, I will buy them again but not on a regular basis. I think penguin bars or some other bar type treat is better value money wise and lunch box treat wise, hence the rating of only three stars.

Summary: Good lunch box snack for now and then.
