Advantages: Chocolate , caramel, ice cream

Disadvantages: Caramel chocolate cups

In the past I have tried the ice cream tubs which have been based on existing chocolate bars and have more often than not been disappointed. However, having recently spent far too much money on Ben and Jerry?s and Haagen Dazs, it was definitely time to find an ice cream which wouldn?t have such a big impact on my wallet.

VALUE

The Rolo ice cream comes in a litre sized tub. This is double the size of the luxury ice creams previously mentioned, so we are already off to a good start! The cost is £2.49 for one tub and this is only just over half the price of the luxury products. Well, it is already hard to see why I couldn?t resist buying one, or two....

At the moment Tesco is doing a BOGOF offer on this product and a selection of other confectionary based ice creams. So, I though to myself, let me get this right - I can have TWO litres of ice cream for only £2.49.

Bargain!

THE ICE CREAM

The ice cream is a mixture of chocolate flavoured ice cream and caramel flavoured ice cream, with caramel swirls and chocolate caramel cups. In spite of the cheap price of the product they have not skimped on variety of ingredients or complexity of production and I was impressed that not only did the tub contain the expected ice cream but it offered the luxurious soft swirls and hard chocolate lumps, which are often found only in the more pricey ice cream products.

So, the contents sounds good, how did it translate into an ice cream eating experience?

The ice cream itself was extremely soft and fluffy in texture and needed very little melting time prior to eating, which was great for an impatient ice cream eater like me! I was able to take it out of the freezer and begin to dip in with my spoon within minutes, rather than to have to sit near the tub being tormented by the site of it while knowing that if I attempted to start to dig in I would just end up with a spoon that looked as though Uri Geller had been
at work on it!

I loved the soft texture and the ice cream seemed to instantly melt as it hit the tongue. The chocolate ice cream had a light milk chocolate flavour and was not too heavy or sickly. The caramel ice cream was very, very caramelly indeed and blended well with the chocolate flavour.

The caramel swirls were yummy and added a sort of liquid warmth which contrasted well with the soft cold ice cream. Unfortunately though, so soft and delicious was the ice cream that the hard chocolate caramel cups, although delcious in themselves, resulted in too stark a contrast with the ice cream and I found that they seemed far too obtrusive in the mixture. This problem was overcome with ease and I fed the cups to my obliging hubby.

GIMME, GIMME, GIMME

Double the size, I thought - this tub should last me two nights instead of my usual 500ml individual portion. Hmmm, unfortunately it didn?t quite work out like that. The ice cream was soooo delicious, soooo soft and soooo easy to pour down the gullet that I inadvertently ate the entire 1 litre tub in one evening. Whoops!

Those of you who are not such utter gluttons as I am will find that this ice cream is extremely good value; it is delicious and half the price of luxury makes and double the size! What more could you ask for? This is a bargain hunters dream.

However, those of you who, like me, have the self-control of a jellyfish (I?ve seen them behind the beach huts at Bognor cramming 99?s down their throats) will find this ice cream just far too tempting and will begin to wish that it came in smaller tubs, so that the urge to eat an entire litre wouldn?t be so strong. I suppose I could always decant my evening portion into a bowl but that just wouldn?t be the same as decadently spooning it out of the tub, would it? Would it? Please tell me I?m not alone!

I have had to stop buying this ice cream, delicious as it is, as I was beginning to pack awa
y a few too many calories. I know feel thoroughly guilty having written this review and it is beginning to sink in just how much of a piglet I am.

I?m going to slink off now and wallow in self loathing but I suggest you all slink off and wallow in Rolo ice cream - if you dare!

Not tried this...yet. But I did eventually manage to track down B&J Fudge Central (or whatever it was called - the one with the truffle/fudge centre) when it made an all-too-brief appearance in Asda. Very yummy, it was. The bit in the middle reminded me of the chocolate fudge sauce on McDonald's sundaes.

A litre by criminey. I'd hate to see what you'd be like if they banned ice-cream!
