Advantages: Great taste

Disadvantages: Too coarse texture and too sweet for some?

My fondest memory of Rowntree's Fruit Pastilles (and I use the term "fondest" very loosely - more "memorable") was when I was about 10 and I was chewing the Hell out of one, when it suddenly dropped out of my mouth, along with one of my fillings! These are probably the chewiest sweets on the market, to the extent that it latched onto one of my fillings and wouldn't let go!

The most beloved and common form of the Fruit Pastille is the foil tube, which contains a number of circular sweets (that look like the pieces on draughs board) of varying colours and flavours. There are other versions that change the shape of the pastilles, but for me, it's always going to be the cylindrical one. If I'm feeling especially greedy at the checkout, I might buy the multipack of 5 tubes, which always saves you a little money if you know you're going to be pigging out on them anyway!

The sweets themselves are absolutely caked in sugar - it gives them a coarse texture that is actually surprisingly agreeable as it glides across your tongue whilst you try to tackle its chewiness! Despite being very sugary, there's actually no fat whatsoever, surprising considering most of these chewy sweets are packed with gelatine and other nasty things. That said, the whopping 83.6 g of carbohydrates somewhat accounts for this and balances things out.

Of the chewy sweets on the market, none are chewier than this, and I always, ALWAYS speak of my filling incident when I discuss these sweets. Despite my unfortunate incident (which resulted in a rather lengthy trip back to the dentist), I still purchase these often and enjoy their delicious, sugary taste. That said, they're likely to be too rough and sweet for some tastes, so sadly I can't say that they're perfect in that regard!

Summary: A divisive but delightful sweet
