Advantages: Strong flavours, could taste worse
Disadvantages: Taste lingers too long, look off-putting
I was looking for something healthy to go with my sandwich today, and Ryvita Minis caught my eye. I love sweet chilli flavoured things, and I picked them up as a good alternative to crisps.
The packet is about the same size as a bag of crisps, and weighs 30g with the contents. This flavour is bright red and advertises that they are only 3% fat and 101 calories. Also, they are high in fibre. A good start.
However, when I opened the packet and pulled one out, I was kind of disgusted by the appearance. They are like rectangles of cardboard with a weird salty look to them, as if someone had put glue on a bit of brown card and then dipped it in salt (despite only containing 0.3g of salt per packet).
Unimpressed, I decided to go for it and try it anyway. At first I wasn't a big fan, but I got keener as I got further through the packet and the taste built up.
They are incredibly strongly flavoured with sweet chilli, and get stronger gradually. In the end they are quite fiery, which I wasn't really expecting, but they still tasted quite nice.
I ended up alternating bites of Ryvita Minis with bites of sandwich, because they are quite dry and strongly flavoured.
I'm also not so keen on the fact that I can still taste them, which is ruining the taste of my Muller Rice slightly!
Overall, I have quite mixed feelings about this product. They look worse than I expected, I have mixed feelings about the overly strong taste, but they could be worse. Then again, they could be much better.
I had a quick sneaky look at the ingredients to see if there are any nasties in there, but there's nothing particularly or noticeably bad. They also contain rye and barley, which is good.
Summary: I'll probably try some of the other flavours eventually and then see

- 10/06/09 Ryvita again . . . I just can not stomach this stuff. When I have one of these wafers, I feel as if I eat wind . . . as if there is no substance to it. You wrote a very nice review on it, though! |
