Advantages: Smoked salmon trimmings that can be utilised in recipes.
Disadvantages: None
If you have a favourite recipe that uses a small amount of smoked salmon, or maybe you would like to fill some vol au vents or treat yourself to a smoked salmon kedgeree then the quality of the Basics smoked salmon trimmings is sufficiently good enough.
I fully appreciate that if you are going to eat smoked salmon for supper then you would have to go all out and buy salmon steaks, I wouldn't want to sit down to a plate of fishy trimmings either!
The pack of Basics smoked salmon trimmings does look like the poor relation in the chiller cabinet, there is little that anyone can do to make the product look more aesthetically pleasing.
Sainsbury's have just done their level best to offer these offcuts at an affordable and acceptable price.
The smoked salmon pieces are packed in the orange and white Basic range colour. The information on the front of the pack lets us know that the smoked salmon is Scottish and that it can be frozen. The small `Freedom food RSPCA` logo is also on the packet, so we can be sure that the fish has been responsibly sourced .
There is one small window in the packaging and this lets us see what the pack contains. Sainsbury don't make any promises that the salmon will be evenly coloured, the slices and trimmings are at the end of the day what has been trimmed off when the whole salmon has been prepared. What you see through that window in the pack is a mixture of texture, thickness and hue.
The plastic packet opens easily and the smoked salmon trimmings have been laid on a piece of foil covered cardboard, because the pack is chilled the trimmings tend to stick together, as with any smoked food the smell is strong and I just love that smoky aroma.
Although there are only 120g in the packet I still prefer to open it and sort the wheat from the chaff, I may use a half of the pack and freeze the other half.
As you sort through the trimmings make sure that you keep your eye out for any odd bones, Sainsbury do say that there may be the odd one floating about. Some of the trimmings have a touch of skin on them but on the whole they are meaty enough and they appear fresh and clean.
If any fish has spent a long time sitting about before it is packed it can be very off-putting.
The pack contains 97% salmon, salt and sugar. A half of the pack provides you with 132 calories, 8.4g fat, 1.7g saturated fat, 2.30g salt and 0.2g of sugar.
The salmon is suitable for coeliacs.
If you open the pack and don't freeze some of the salmon then you must use the salmon within the next 24 hours.
The Basic range smoked salmon trimmings are a means to an end and for anyon
e who needs a small amount of fresh salmon for a recipe then for 88p they have to be a good buy.
Summary: Cheap and cheerful but they can come in very useful.
