Advantages: Cheap, tastes okish (I guess lol)
Disadvantages: Slimy, smelly, chopped up roughly and tastes incredibly greasy to me
One of my favourite things to eat in the world is a warm toasted muffin with some soft cheese on and lashes of fresh salmon. I usually buy rather expensive salmon or none at all so when I saw this at 88p I thought I'd have a go with it! I've read reviews on it (on here) which are a mixed bag (read other people's reviews lol) so I was a bit intrigued by it really!
The Packaging....
Oblong but quite wide white plastic packet with silver tray inside and on the right hand side of the packet there is a clear 'window' of which you can see some of the salmon through. To the top of the packet there is a orange band of colour and on that in white writing I'm told it's Sainsbury's 'Basics'. Under that in orange writing I'm told it is 'Scottish Responsibly Sourced Smoked Salmon Slices & Shades'. There is an at a glance nutritional pye chart on there, I'm told it is only available in Sainsbury's, that it is RSPCA monitored, high in Omega 3, is freezable and the use by date is clearly displayed. On the back of the now clear plastic backing I'm told a bit about the product and a bit of information about Omega 3 Fats, nutritional information is given, ingredients and allergy advice are listed, I'm told how to store it, size is stated (120g), contact details for Sainsbury's are given and finally there is a bar-code on there. Simple, straightforward packaging this is.
A Bit About The Salmon According To The Back Of The Packet....
We take great care to ensure our salmon is the best it can be. Here are some of the reasons why:
All Sainsbury's Scottish salmon is sourced from dedicated farms around the West Coast and Isles Of Scotland chosen for the ideal conditions. The farms use responsible management to protect and maintain the natural environment.
The salmon is fed a exclusive diet designed to both protect our natural resources from over fishing and guarantee great taste and nutritional benefit for you.
All our Scottish salmon are reared in accordance with the strict RSPCA Freedom Food standards for farmed salmon.
The Salmon Itself.....
I thought salmon was salmon and this would be as good as any of my usual stuff. It isn't awful but it is totally economy. Even if you except that the pieces of salmon are all different shapes and sizes and even different colours of orange, therefore looking cheap the taste just isn't all that great. I did like the salty and smoked taste going on in this fish but I found the texture of the salmon to be rather jellied and gloopy and to the touch and taste it tasted really fatty. Now to be fair the only ingredients in this is Salmon, salt and sugar but even to the touch of it....well....it feels greasy and slimy and sweaty as well lol.
This isn't tasteless and would probably be fine say in a pasta dish adding no salt to it say (it is salty and slightly sugared) but I wouldn't use this in sandwiches or in muffins or anything like that not just for the reasons I said but also because it just doesn't look that great visually really being bits and pieces instead of nice equal slices type of thing. If you like salmon and like me, think of it as a treat then don't treat yourself to this because it's disappointing and low in quality but hey you get what you pay for in life mostly eh? lol. If you want to cook with it, omit salt and I'm sure it's passable but for me I won't be economising ever again on salmon!
