I love smoked salmon but am not so in love with the price so when my mum noticed that Sainsburys Basics sell smoked salmon for about 90p a packet she brought some and we tried it with our scrambled eggs this morning and it's delish.

The only difference between this dead cheap smoked salmon and the more expensive ones is that this one looks a bit manky because the salmon is in bits instead of slices and the colour isn't very consistent through the packet. The colour of most of it is a good pink but some bits have got a bit of a fainter colour and there are some tiny bits of darker fish that I think is where Sainsbury's have taken the skin and fat off very carefully.

It's got a wicked salty flavour and the salmon is nice and smokey. It's got a lovely texture and isn't slimy or too chewy like I was expecting it to be. I don't think you could use it at a party because it doesn't look nice enough but if it's just for us that doesn't matter because it's the taste that's important not the appearance too much. My mum's got another packet that she's going to put in a fish stew for dinner tomorrow and I reckon that will be a wicked treat because the salty flavour will go proper nice with the creamy sauce my mum makes with fish stew.

When I was putting the smoked salmon in the bowl to mix in with the eggs this morning I tried a few bits on their own and it was yummy. I think it's a bit saltier than other smoked salmon I've tried but that doesn't bother me and when it was with the buttery scrambled eggs you couldn't notice the extra salt anyway. I tried a bit on a cracker this afternoon with some soft cheese and it was delish, there's smothing about smoked salmon that makes you feel posh even when you're just eating this cheapo stuff!
