Advantages: Cheap, tasty
Disadvantages: Not the prettiest
I am a big fan of smoked salmon although it is usually a very expensive item, so I was keen to try the Sainsburys basics smoked salmon trimmings when I discovered them for just 88p a packet.
For your 88p you get 120g of smoked salmon bits packaged in the usual
basics range style white and orange packet. The salmon is described as various cuts, slices and shades. The packet lists the ingredients as 97% scottish salmon, salt and sugar. Whilst I am sure that no-one with a fish allergy would be considering this product, it helpfuly informs us under dietary information that it contains fish. As with all Sainsburys smoked salmon this is Scottish salmon and it meets RSPCA welfare standards for farmed salmon.
When you open the packet you find lots of little pieces of salmon which are indeed different shades. I presume that these are the pieces left over when the thin slices are cut for the more expensive packets of smoked salmon. It doesn't look like the most attractive smoked salmon in the world, but to be honest, it tastes fine. I would not eat this salmon on its own, or use it as part of a salad or sandwich. Where this product is ideal however is for using as an ingredient in dishes where I would have otherwise cut up more expensive salmon. I often eat smoked salmon in pasta or risotto dishes, and here this is ideal.
I would recommend this product to anyone using smoked salmon in cooked dishes, where it is a cheap. tasty alternative to an otherwise
expensive product.
Summary: A great value buy
