Advantages: ITS 33P!!!! Great tasting biscuit, nice chocolate flavour, soak up a good amount of tea
Disadvantages: Slightly smaller biscuit size, not the healthiest food in the world!
Dunking a biscuit into your cup of tea is one of the most English and traditional actions you could possibly do. Don't deny it, you all love to dip your favourite biccy into your cup of PG Tips or earl grey! I needed some new dunking biscuits myself, so when I did the rounds in Sainsbury's a few days back, I wondered what's the point in getting the more expensive, branded variety of my favourite milk chocolate digestives when all I do with half the packet is get them hot and soggy, full of tea goodness which surely masks any differences in quality??
For 33p, Sainsbury's offer their Basic range in milk chocolate digestive biscuits. Coming in at 300g, the packaging is definitely not something to shout about. In the standard livery of the Basic range, the plastic wrapping is very thin and flimsy, so be careful handling the biscuits or else you could easily end up squashing them! It comes in a cylindered shape, but a bit smaller compared to its competitors. They are found in the biscuit aisle (surprise surprise!), usually taking up a lot of shelf space due to their demand.
The biscuit itself is like your standard digestive, covered on one side with a layer of milk chocolate. Compared to McVities, these biscuits are quite a bit smaller in diameter, but the chocolate coating is not thinly spread, so on first appearances the biscuit looks no different to any other.
With the kettle boiled, I decided to take four with me to my room and my trusty cup of tea. I cheated and tried one biscuit before the dunking session began! And to my absolute surprise, the biscuit tasted EXACTLY like the branded varieties! The milk chocolate was smooth and tasty, the biscuit was full of the standard digestive flavour, and it crumbled exactly how you would expect it would! So I went ahead and dunked the remaining three, and again I was amazed how much like the branded biscuits it tasted. They soaked in a decent amount of tea, whilst the chocolate was slightly melted thanks to the hot liquid, and the overall combination in the mouth felt like pure traditional British heaven.
So where's the bad stuff? Well, to say these biscuits are not good for you are an understatement. According to their web site, each biscuit contains 4.1g of fat, 2.1g of salt, 86 calories and 4.9g total sugar. I could think of a lot more healthier snacks to past the time with!
But ignorance is bliss, and for 33p I will definitely be buying these biscuits again. One of the most surprising, and best tasting Sainsbury's Basic products I have tried to date.
Summary: I don't see much point paying for the branded biscuits now - these are absolutely brilliant!
