These come in the standard basics packaging of white tin with the orange writing and logo 'Sainsbury's basics'. They come in the standard tin sized portion of 400g and at a very reasonable price of 35p currently! Bargain! These are one of the cheapest tinned/boxed tomatoes that are available in the store and I find them to be a great addition to my cupboard Upon opening the tin one needs to use a tin opener, which I presume the majority of people own. The contents are basically what it says on the label, chopped tomatoes. The contents look quite a deep red with a thickish sauce, rather than a watery one. The pieces of tomato are ... I use chopped tomatoes quite often in cooking and like most people at the moment I am trying to keep shopping costs to a minimum. I believe these to be a cupboard staple that I am just never without so I want to try and find the cheapest ones possible at a reasonable price. A 400g tin is approximately 35p in Sainsburys at present which is a little more expensive than some of the other supermarkets. A 400g tin has 80 calories, 12.8 sugar (high for what it is) and 0.4g of fat. So at least this is low in fat but what with it being cheap it is high in sugar (to give it an extra tang!). This is actually a little higher than the Tesco Value version and it's quite a ... Read the complete review

As with its counterparts from various other supemarkets, this particular Sainsbury's Basics product does the trick without breaking the bank. We tend to keep a decent stock of tins in our cupboard, and in particular, chopped tomatoes get used a lot. We add them to plenty of our dishes throughout the week, and thus any time we're in a supermarket, we're likely to pick up a tin of their bog standard cheapy chopped tomatoes. The Tesco Value variety are the ones we usually go for, as we tend to do our big shop in Tesco, but I work near a Sainsbury's, and so from time to time, I'll pick up a tin of these. There's nothing special about them, and I'm not too fond of ... Read the complete review

I usually pick up Asda's own chopped tomatoes, but tried these the other day and they couldn't have been more different. The tin is packaged in the basic range colours of orange and white, and looks pretty dull. At around 30p a tin, they're cheap and they look it. Upon opening, I was surprised to see how thick the sauce was - much thicker than Asdas, suggesting a higher quality. We usually add something to the Asda one to thicken it, so this was a nice surprise. The tomatoe chunks themselves are quite big, and again this was a nice surprise. The taste is very tomatoey, and the texture is ripe, juicy and fresh. In fact, I can't ... Read the complete review

Recently I've been making my own tomato soup using tinned tomatoes, which incidentally is much nicer than any shop bought tinned soup, and I've been trying out various makes of 'cheap' tomatoes. Of the ones I've tried so far Tesco, Asda and Lidl have all been perfectly acceptable but Sainsbury's Basics Chopped Tomatoes really stand out from the others. The label on the tin is in the usual Sainsbury's Basics colours, i.e. white with orange in the main and the tomatoes are described as "all red tomatoes, different shades". Nutritional information lists that per ½ can there are 40 calories, 6.4g total sugars, and trace fat, saturated fat and salt. ... Read the complete review
