In practice, you end up pulling tiny shreds of the lid off, before eventually giving up on peeling the lid back, and stabbing into the top of the packet with a knife and then ripping it apart with your hands as your hunger turns you into a depraved cavewoman . The packaging is non-resealable - not that there was much of it left to reseal after I'd managed to get into it! The smell of the product is strange - yes, it's a little hammy, but its also vaguely sweet, which I find quite baffling . The slices themse...more

Premium Review Sainsbury's Basics Cooked Ham: Wet, rubbery and slimy - just like my first kiss! (430 words)

Yet another one of my budget buys from my experimental Sainsburys shop! I love sandwiches, they're such a quick and handy snack, and my favourites are ham and cheese. So, when I went to Sainsburys, I decided I had to grab some ham for a sandwich, and me being the utterly impoverished cheapskate that I am, I opted for a pack of the 'Basics' brand ham . The packaging is clear plastic with a white label on top with orange writing, and contains all the relevant ingredient and nutritional information . It's also a pain in the backside to open . In theory, it has this loose corner that you can pull up, which should pull the whole lid back. In practice, ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Reformed ham? What, it used to be bad and now it behaves? (492 words)

Ham, ham and more ham. Every time I go to a supermarket just to get some bloody ham, I am met with a plethora of choices. You almost need a website to compare the ham pros and cons and help you with your decisions. Depending on your budget, and what you want the ham for, this could be a good one to go for. What you get is a stack of ham slices, around 30 of them, that are square, and will fit just nicely into a sandwich. Sure, it's completely processed ham and isn't going to give you an explosion of meaty taste, but there is something there, and it's handy to pop into a sandwich. If you wanted to have ham for any other purpose, it's probably not the ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Sainsbury's Basics Cooked Ham: Mr Sainsbury Makes A Cheap Pig Sandwich. (440 words)

I like to try and save money wherever possible so decided to give this 'Basics' Cooked ham a try in the place of my normal Sainsbury's ham to save myself around £1.50. There are 30 square cut slices of reformed ham that has been cooked and cured with added water. There is 75% pork in each slice which is obviously less than I'd like but not bad for such a cheap product. Each slice of ham has 12 calories and 0.4g of fat so is pretty good if you are watching your waistline, however, there is 0.33g of salt per ham making everything in the food circle green except the sale which is red. The packet is fairly tough plastic and I found the only way to get ...  Read the complete review

I have been slowly trying to shift down a brand with my food shopping over the last few months and to be fair I have found that some supermarket's economy brand products are actually a good value for money trade - but this is not one of them. I bought the Sainsbury's Basics British Cooked Ham for £1.64 for 400g which apparently equates to 30 slices although I did not count them. The first thing I noticed which was quite annoying was the cheapness of the packaging, it has one of those awful plastic packets where you are supposed to pull one corner to peel back the lid. However, this is one of those where pulling on the corner will result in ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Sainsbury's Basics Cooked Ham: Give this little piggy a miss! (423 words)

I love ham and pickle sandwiches (without butter please!). My hubby also takes four to work each day so we tend to get through quite a lot of it. I usually buy the wafer thin ham from Sainsburys which costs £2.15 for a good amount but a while I decided to try this 'Basic' one. The first problem I found with it is the plastic casing it comes in. The usual ham I buy has a thick plastic lid that tends to reseal itself once it's opened but this one wa a bit different. The top was really hard to open, flimsy and I had to reseal with lots of cling film. When I opened the lid I got a strong smell of ham but it was different to one I usually buy. It almost ...  Read the complete review
