Advantages: Cheap and tasty.
Disadvantages: Some are crumbly.
Digestive biscuits have to be one of my favourites. In theory they are pretty boring but in my mouth they are explosive. I always remember when I was little how my dad had his own packet of Mcvities Digestives. We weren't a loud anywhere near them and tey were kept on the highest shelf in the top cupboard. If the biscuits that my mum bought for us ran out then we'd walk into the living room and quietly whisper 'Can I have one of YOUR biscuits dad?'. Most of the time he'd say 'Yes' but it would always be followed with the moan about he could never have anything of his own in the house without it being eaten before he gets to it.
I made a cheesecake last night and one of the ingredients was some digestive biscuits. I wasn't about to pay for a full priced packet of the Mcvities variety so I picked up these instead. They cost 31p for a 400g pack.
The biscuits are quite small compared to the brand name but it does say that on the pack and recommends that they are better for dunking. Personally I'm not a dunker as I don't drink tea or coffee and if I try to use my hubbys hot drink then he moans that I leave it in too long and he doesn't want to end up with a load of sludge in the bottom of his mug.
The biscuits are a nice brown colour and look as though they have been sunning it on a beach in Jamaica for a few weeks. The have the words 'Sweetmeal Digestive biscuits' written on them and are around an inch thick.
As I was making my cheesecake I couldn't resist taking one of the biscuits from the packet and having a little munch. I was really impressed with them and they taste very similar to the named brand that my and used to buy al those years ago. They were really sweet and oaty and the biscuit got stuck in between my teeth as I was eating it. I was a little afraid that they may be too salty for me. I don't tend to add salt to anything so can really taste in a lot of foods and find it really off-putting but I couldn't tate the salt at all.
The biscuits were pretty sturdy although I did notice they they got a little crumbly as I got to thebottom of the pack. I'm not sure if that was due tot he fact that I let my two year old son man handle them or if they re a little bit crumblier than the Mcvities range. For me this isn't a problem because it's notlike every biscuit was absolutely broken to pieces, there wasjust a little bit taken off the edge of a few of them.
The only trouble with these is I find that I just can't stop at one especially if it's close to tea time and I'm having a later tea because we are waiting for an Indian takeaway to arrive. I ended up eating about five nd I've actually just finished off the packet as I'm sat here writing this review. This is really no good because apart from the fact that I'm dieting, they also contain 60 calories and 2.8g of fat per biscuit. No good for the waistline or my diet!
Any way if you haven't tried these then I would recommend that you swap your name brand ones for these. You may as well give it a try because they really are as good as the leading brands as are such a saving on the old pocket. It's worth a go isn't it?
Summary: So morish you won't want to put them down.
