... containing 200g. The packaging is the usual Sainsbury's Basics white and orange, and is nothing particularly exciting. It states that there is 'less tahini, still great for dipping'. Tahini is quite expensive, so using less in this product will help to keep the price down. When the cardboard outer layer is removed, the houmous is contained in a round plastic tub, with a thin Sellophane lid, which you can't replace properly. It could always be put into a plastic box with a rigid lid, to store until it is eaten, though. The ...more

Premium Review Sainsbury's Basics Houmous (352 words)

I really like houmous, and have tried a variety of different ones from the supermarkets, as well as making my own sometimes. It is easy to make, using a tin of chickpeas, some Tahini (Sesame seed) paste, garlic, olive oil, lemon juice, and seasoning. I usually roast the garlic and olive oil in the oven, to soften it, then blend with the other ingredients. Sometimes, I make variations on a chickpea dip, adding onions, peppers or chilli. Houmous is very easy to make, but often it is easier to just get it ready made. The Sainsbury's Basics Houmous costs 75 pence for a tub containing 200g. Premium Review Great with toasted pitta breads! (354 words)

I love houmous and usually eat it at the weekends with some toasted, wholemeal pitas. Imagine my delight when I saw Sainsburys had started doing their own version for just 75p per pot. A basic houmous is only made up of chick peas, oil and garlic so surely this would be worth a shot and although the packaging could put you off, once you've tasted whats inside you will be glad you chose it. On opening the tub I was met with that familiar smell of garlic which radiated from the contents. This concerned me a little because it was very strong and in my opinion you can add too much garlic to a houmous which makes it rather sickly and you can't taste anything ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Sainsbury's Basics Houmous: Tangy tastiness (218 words)

There is a huge array of houmous available in any supermarket now. Red pepper, roasted vegetable, pesto topped, onion topped... it would be quite a taste fest to get through them all. This is the most basic, straightforward houmous, a spread made from blended chick peas, garlic and lemon juice. It's delicious! This comes in a clear pot and has the orange and white Sainsburys basics range packaging. The only flaw I found in comparison to other packs is that there isn't a lid, just some film on top. So to store it you have to fiddle about with cling film or put it into a container, a minor quibble. Tangy and tasty, to be fair it is a ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review A basically excellent houmous! (487 words)

I absolutely love and adore Houmous! I love it with crudites, on sandwiches... all-sorts rally! I saw this 'Basics' one in Sainsburys priced at 75p a tub and was intrigued to try a 'cheap' version of it but right up until the last minute I almost set it aside and didn't purchase it to be totally honest with you cos I did think it would be gross being so cheap! The Packaging.... Clear plastic, round tub with a white cardboard 'sleeve' that slides on and off it. In white and bright orange writing on the top of the sleeve I'm told it's Sainsbury's Basics Houmous 'Less tahini still great for dipping' and there's a scribble in orange of what I assume ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Sainsbury's Basics Houmous: not nice (224 words)

Knowing that I like houmous my husband brought me home some Sainsbury's basic houmous to try. First impressions of packaging were pretty much the same as other basic products, it was only after removing the cardboard sleeve that I realised it didn't have a lid to reseal. It only has an initial plastic cover which you rip off; this can be really annoying if you don't plan to eat the product all in one go, in our house it's only me and my little girl that likes it so to keep it fresh I would have to put it into a Tupperware container. However this was irrelevant to me after I tasted it, as put it this way, I didn't want to save any for later! To me ...  Read the complete review
