Now, I have no idea what ingredient makes that happen, but it thickens on the fork and takes only around 1 minute of stirring to be the right consistency for a nice thick and generous looking custard. Colour-wise, it's a rich yellow, and really everything about it looks really good. Taste-test next, and I am happy to report it tastes good. Unlike the Asda one, this isn't stupidly sweet, but actually has a fairly neu...more

Premium Review Sainsbury's 'Basics' Instant Custard: Cheap custard, but this one workds (243 words)

Fresh off my review of Asda's cheapy custard, I am happy to offer an alternative that is just as cheap, but a whole lot nicer. Sainsbury's 'Basics' Instant Custard is 7p a pack, and comes in their distinctive orange and white packaging. First impressions are netural - the custard powder is very dust-like, but sits in the packet compact, and needs to be tapped about a bit to come out. Adding hot water is where we see the first real difference; this stuff thickens up nicely. Now, I have no idea what ingredient makes that happen, but it thickens on the fork and takes only around 1 minute of stirring to be the right consistency for a nice thick and generous ...  Read the complete review

When it comes to custard I simply love the stuff. Whether it be home made or made out of a powder or out of a tin I actually very rarely care I simply am happy with any offering lol. I just like it and like me hot puddings with it on. As I don't have very much of an appetite at the moment and have found myself once again losing weight I've simply bought things that I fancy and eat them when I have wanted to. With not having an appetite there seems little point in buying expensive food so when I saw this in my local Sainsbury's priced at 7p a packet I grabbed a couple of packets! I couldn't believe the price of it and just for the record this is it's usual ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Sainsbury's 'Basics' Instant Custard: It's 7p so give it a try! (432 words)

In my opinion this is one of those cheap store products that is like a diamond in the rough. Like most people I have been sampling a lot of the cheapest products and there have been some real winner but also some real losers but this is definately a winner for me. I have sampled the Asda Smartprice instant custard and I ca tell you now that this is miles better and Sainsbury's seem to have hit the nail on the head with this one. The custard doesn't look very appealing in it's packaging and nor does it look good when you tear open the top. It's in a powder form and is white with a hint of yellow in it. It costs just 7p from Sainsburys and you will find it in ...  Read the complete review
