Advantages: Tastes great, just 27p for a 100g block, great for cooking
Disadvantages: ----------
As I was away over Easter I decided to throw an Easter party the following Sunday for my granddaughters' and a few select members of my family and their respective children/grandchildren. Despite buying so much food that my neighbour had to store some of the chilled items in her fridge, my ten year old granddaughter decided that she wanted to make some chocolate nests she'd seen being made on tele.
Luckily she mentioned this while I was in Sainsbury's so I went and had a look at the chocolate available, the first thing I spotted was the range of Basics chocolate which costs a bargain 27p per 100g block and is significantly cheaper than buying Dairy Milk. I chose the Milk variety for this review, although I ended up buying a block of each Plain, Milk and White so that my granddaughter could do a few cakes of each.
The milk is excellent for it's price, I have to say that. I used most of the box to melt down and make the nests, but I sneaked a couple of chunks and it was tasty enough. Certainly not the luxurious chocolate you could expect from Lindt, or even Cadbury's, but it definitely doesn't taste like 27p chocolate!
On it's own it's fairly creamy, it tastes a little like the typical Advent calender chocolate but is actually much nicer than that. The only downfall really is that it doesn't really melt in my mouth, but again considering the price could you really expect it to?
When chopped up, melted down and used to make Easter Nests the chocolate really comes into its own. It melts on the hob beautifully to a smooth and glossy paste and mixed really well with the crushed Shredded Wheat to create tall nests that were perfect for placing mini eggs in.
I didn't tell anyone at the party how cheap the chocolate was, and I know for a fact that no-one guessed which is a feat for Sainsbury's in my opinion and by doing it this way you're using real chocolate for a fraction of the price of even cooking chocolate!
I'll definitely buy this again, to be honest if I'm in need of a treat then this chocolate just wouldn't hit the spot but I won't ever complain about my granddaughter wanting to cook a chocolate cake again!
Summary: For 27p you really cannot moan, can you?
