Advantages: Cheap and taste great.
Disadvantages: None
My son had his second birthday party a little while a go so hubby and I popped down Sainsburys to pick up a load of party food. Obviously we were trying to keep to a budget so we bought a lot of the Sainsbury 'Basic' products and this was one of them. I have to say that they were a big hit and I often buy them as a little treat if I fancy some cake.
They come in a plastic tray with clear plastic wrapping around them to keep them fresh. I can't remember exactly how much they cost but I think it was around 35p for six individual cakes.
When you first open the packet a nice, sweet smell drifts out and always makes my mouth water. The cakes have a tanned colour to them and if you look to the side of the packet then you will see the jam and cream inside.
When you pull on from it's little compartment then I always find that part of the cakes skin sticks to the plastic tray but not enough to be annoyed about. It feels nice and soft in between your fingers and if you squeeze it slightly it pings back into shape which shows that they are pretty fresh.
The cakes have a really sweet taste to them and aren't dry like I thought they would be. They are surpirsingly moist and I don't find that they stick in my throat like a lump of lead. I absolutely hate when you eat something and when you swallow you can pin point exactly where it is in your throat and get that burning feeling as it moves painfully slowly along your tubes!
The jam and cream compliment the sponge nicely and although you can tell it's a little cheap, it doesn't leave a horrible after taste and just makes the whole thing come alive.
The cakes aren't that big and I can finish one within three bites so I always end up eating a few to satisfy my craving. Each cake contains 77 calories, 7g of sugar and 2.4g of fat so it's not too bad if you fancy more than one.
There are two ways to eat these little cakes and depending on my mood I will choose one of the following:
Take a few bites and devour the whole thing in a matter of seconds
OR
Find the end and unravel it until it is flat then pick off little bits so it lasts longer. If you do choose to do it this way then there is an art to it. If you do it too fast or carelessly then the sponge will break and it will all be a wasted effort but if you take your time and have patience then you will be rewarded with a flat, thin piece of sponge covered in a white and red cream. Hah isn't this a reward worth trying to conquer?? LOL!
My only complaint is that the wrapper isn't resealable so if you don't eat them all in one sitting then you have to find a container to pop them in but for 35p you can't expect everything.
These cakes are great and I would recommend them but I don't think it's one that you should get out if you are having a 'Snobby' class of people around!
Summary: A nice cheap cake
