Sainsbury's Basics Pork Pies
Advantages: Good Value
Disadvantages: The Pastry is a bit odd
I bought these at the weekend expecting a cheap pork pie covered in gristle and small portions of meat (its not that I wanted this but being on a budget wanted a pork pie but could only afford these). I was pleasantly surprised.
Where can I buy them:
Well this is probably not going to shock you but the best place to buthe Sainsburys Basic's range in in Sainsburys Supermarkets. You can find the pork pies with the cold meats and sausage rolls and pates in the refridgerated section.
How do they look:
Honestly if you bought them on appearance you would have to be very short of cash, they look awful, the packaging is a clear plastic cover with a small orange 'Basics range' monker and you can see the pork pies, they are between medium and large size and you can see through the plastic that the pastry is greasy and a bit overdone.
How much do they cost:
For 4 Pork Pies, it costs 98p, the package weighs 440g in total. So you could say each pie costs roughly 25p and weighs 110g, this compares favourably with the price of a 142g Pork Farms Pork Pie at 91p.
How does it taste:
Well as I explained at the outset, the pastry is a tad greasy and overdone and it ruins the pie for me, the filling is fine with some decent pork and nice remnants of jelly as any good pie has but the pastry tastes a bit false and manufactured and ruins the whole taste of the pie for me. One pie is more than enough for anyone and these are incredibly unhealthy to eat, however if you are on a budget they are absolutely great value and good to add to a nice ploughmans lunch or your lunchbox, but being honest, if you really want a quality pie you will have to pay the extra, but if you are watching the pennies and like a pork pie now and then, this is definitely worth buying and gets a 3 out of 5 based on the value and how long they will last and the fact you can always remove the pastry to enjoy the pork filling.
One of the things that I liked most about this product was the statement that it was made using British Pork, one of my biggest worries with some of the value products is that they are using cheap leftovers that might affect the taste and quality of the brand, this is not the case with this filling.
Summary: I'm not telling Pork Pies, I promise!
