Advantages: Nice buttery/cheesy flavour, gorgeously flaky
Disadvantages: Broken into bit because of the flimsy packaging
I love anything that has a savoury cheese flavour so when I was in Sainsbury's buying for my granddaughters upcoming birthday party and I saw their own brand Cheese Twists priced at a very reasonable 59p I put a couple of packets in the trolley, thinking I could present them on the buffet table in nicely patterned pot as they were shown on the wrapper.
These Cheese Twists are loose inside a plastic punnet which is then covered in a thin foil packet, and this is where the one and only problem occurs. The Cheese Twists are flaky and delicate and having them rattle around in this punnet meant that the majority of them weren't only broken but quite literally shattered into pieces! I fished the big bits out and unfortunately they weren't long enough for me to put in the pots, so I had to pile them up on a plate instead for guests to pick at.
Oh, they are delicious though. I make my own cheese straws, but the shop bought ones are something entirely different in my opinion and these are definitely one of the best. They are pale and a golden yellow colour, they are nicely twisted and look flaky and very tasty.
The taste of these Cheese Twists is subtly cheesy, there is 15% cheese used to create them but I would say the flavour is stronger than this so they must have used a fairly strong tasting cheese. The Twists taste lovely and buttery, I think the flakiness and softness of the inside of each Twist really make these special.
These are a lovely savoury snack which would be as good for lunchboxes as party food, they're very easy to eat because despite how flaky and delicate they are they are not dry once you start munching on them. I provided some dips including a home made salsa and a lot of people who ate them said how well the Twists went with the sweet tomato salsa, which presumably is because of the classic cheese and tomato combination.
Each Twist (providing you can find a full one amongst all the bits) contains 34 calories and 1.7g of fat, which isn't bad on the face of it but these are so moreish that I could quite easily have eaten 10 Twists and that would have amounted to a huge 340 calories. Good job I only had a couple then!
These cost only 59p from Sainsbury's and I'll definitely buy them again, although I wish they could come up with better packaging to stop them from becoming smashed up.
Summary: A lovely variation on cheese straws.
