=========================================
Many years ago, I used to hate any kind of bakewell tart, as I felt that pastry and sponge cake didn't harmonise with one another, but later on in life I have changed my point of view. I love lemony flavoured things, and bought a pack of Sainsbury's 6 Lemon Bakewells.
These lemon bakewells come in a largely yellow coloured box, with an image of a plate containing six gorgeous-looking tarts, one of which is cut open to reveal the inside. The back of the box shows the nutritional information, ingredients list, allergy advice, Sainsbury's quality claim plus their contact details, and a little panel giving brief advice on how to adopt a healthy lifestyle (a little odd perhaps, as the cakes themselves are far from healthy??). There is also a statement that the only part of the packaging which is recyclable, is the outer cardboard box.
On opening the box, the six tarts are in little foil cases, resting in a brownish/reddish coloured moulded plastic tray, and this tray is in a sealed cellophane wrapper. The pastry edges are nicely fluted, and the surface is a very attractive-looking custard-yellow coloured icing.
It is very difficult to remove one of the tarts from the foil case, as the pastry crumbles very easily, so if you are serving them to other people whereby appearances may be more important than if you are eating them alone, I'd suggest leaving the cakes in the foil cases and letting your guests remove them.
Each tart is fairly deep, and on taking the first bite, the pastry is lovely - rich, crumbly and buttery. The filling is interesting, and a slightly unusual take on the ordinary idea of bakewell tarts, in that the bottom is a light sponge, with a generous serving of lemon curd spread over the surface, then on top of that is a nice thick layer of lemon-flavoured water icing. The four components that make up the tarts (pastry, sponge, lemon curd and lemon icing) blend perfectly well together, making a deliciously mouth-watering treat.
These tarts may be a little on the sweet side for some people, but that sweetness is tempered with a slight sharpness that the icing has.
I'm not ashamed to admit that when I first opened the box of these lemon bakewells, I scoffed three of them on the trot, because they are absolutely heavenly. I am going to have to try and exercise a little willpower, because if I don't, I could easily fall into the habit of eating at least half a box each day.
Yes, they are high in all sorts of spine-curdling things such as sugar, fat, calories etc., but they do claim to be free from artificial flavourings and colourings.
If you love lemony flavoured things and have a sweet tooth, I'm sure you will find Sainsbury's Lemon Bakewells as delicious as I do, and they are also reasonably priced.
In a way I'm sorry I discovered this product, as I'm going to find it very difficult to stop myself buying them by the lorry load, but Sainsbury's definitely have created perfection here and heaven thus comes highly recommended by me.
Thanks for reading!
Summary: A scrumptious, scintillating, stupendously sweet sensation
