Advantages: Full of steak , Tasty, Great crust
Disadvantages: None for me
I have tried a few minced steak and onion pies, but one of the best (in my opinion) is Sainsbury’s Shortcrust Pastry Minced Steak and Onion Pie.
This pie comes in a foil tray packaged in a sturdy cardboard box, and is from the chilled section of Sainsbury’s.
Weighing 520 grams the pie is not for one (unless you are greedy), but is a generous size for two people. At a price of £1.99GBP I find that is well worth the money.
The picture on the box does not tell a lie, as Sainsbury’s Shortcrust Pastry Minced Steak and Onion Pie is full of minced steak and finely chopped onions with rich beef gravy.
The main ingredients are: minced beef steak (26%), onion, wheat flour, and beef stock.
I will not list all the other ingredients, but just will say they are clearly shown on the box.
Other useful information is also shown. This includes nutrition values, as well as storage and cooking instructions.
Sometimes I will buy 2 or 3 pies at a time and freeze them. I have found that freezing these pies does not spoil the taste or texture when we eventually cook and eat the Sainsbury’s Shortcrust Pastry Minced Steak and Onion Pie.
The cooking instructions are very easily read and understood. You can cook Sainsbury’s Shortcrust Pastry Minced Steak and Onion Pie from chilled in 30 minutes, or from frozen in approximately 45 minutes.
What about the taste I may hear you ask.
Well, I find the taste of Sainsbury’s Shortcrust Pastry Minced Steak and Onion Pie is just excellent. When I cut into the crust it is not too dry and definitely not soggy at all. I think Sainsbury’s have got it right, as you can just cut nice thick chunks off the edge and digest without thinking: this is dry or soggy.
When I come to the main part of the pie (the meat), my taste buds are tickled because the meat itself is well chosen for the taste and consistency. As yet I have not found grisly or fatty meat. I also find that there is not too much onion to spoil the meaty taste of Sainsbury’s Shortcrust Pastry Minced Steak and Onion Pie. Gravy in this pie is not a problem for me. Some pies are all gravy, but not this one.
I find the best accompaniments to Sainsbury’s Shortcrust Pastry Minced Steak and Onion Pie are new potatoes and garden peas, with just a hint of beef gravy poured over the meal. Of course, a glass of wine will assist in making the meal great.
So I can definitely recommend Sainsbury’s Shortcrust Pastry Minced Steak and Onion Pie to anyone wishing to have this type of meal.
Thanks for reading this review.

- 26/06/05 You have a great talent for writing food reviews. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this one. I actually only had a Sainsburys Pie last night - delicious! Although I find Sainsburys to be a little more expensive than other supermarkets, their quality of food is some much better though! I will try this one next time I am in Sainsburys. Informative, well presented and a real pleasure to read. Vicx. xx
