Advantages: A tasty little snack
Disadvantages: a little high in fat
Sausage rolls and Vol-Au Vents took pride of place at every party or wedding reception I ever went to...a good few years ago mind you!
Now sausage rolls are pretty common or garden and many of us buy them regularly for a snack or a quick meal.
You would never think that sausage rolls could vary so much, but if you pay a penny or two extra then on the whole the tastier the product. I have tried numerous own brands and cheaper versions and the majority have been a disappointment.
The pastry is a huge factor, a buttery flaky pastry is half of the attraction, though I must admit I do live a good shortcrust pastry too.
These mini sausage rolls are brilliant for little visitors, Yes you could go to Gregg's the bakers and buy a couple of large ones and cut them down, but the kids think its a novelty if they have a mini portion.
Sainsbury`s have got the balance right with these mini savories, the sausage meat is just lightly seasoned and the flaky pastry is as light as a feather and is at its bet when eaten warm.
The 20 mini sausage rolls are neatly packed into a PVC tray and covered with a plastic film. To the left of the packet the plastic film is gold coloured and the words `British Pork` sits in a green triangle. Wording inside of a brown rectangle tells us that there are 20 Sainsbury`s mini sausage rolls inside of the pack.
At £1.55 for a packet of 20 they are decent value, each sausage roll contains 61 calories, 4.1g fat, 1.6g saturated fat, 0.3 sugar and 0.2 salt. The product contains wheat, gluten and milk.
They can be frozen but always freeze them on the day of purchase.
To heat them through thoroughly preheat the oven to 180C and place the sausage rolls on a baking tray into the middle of the oven for 10-12 minutes to heat through. When you take them out of the oven they smell superbly savoury, the flaky pastry looks golden, fluffy, light and though you can see the fat glistening they haven't lost their pert shape.
Layer after layer of crispy flakes sit on top of a small but tasty roll of sausage and though the entire thing is just one mouthful it is a tasty morsel.
When the kids visit they are an ideal teatime snack for them, the size is perfect, no wastage and they are just the right size for those little fingers to hold.
A snippet of news in the Daily Telegraph announced that the sausage roll and the Vol Au Vent had been consigned to history by the Prawn Wanton. Well im sure that the Prawn Wanton is delicious but im not turning my back on the humble sausage roll.
Granted when the sit in packets in the chilled department at Sainsbury they aren't head turners but put them in the oven and heat them up and the smell is second to none.
Summary: A tasty snack for all the family
