Advantages: It is supposed to be free of growth hormones; it only costs a few pence more than ordinary milk

Disadvantages: You can't taste any difference

Having two small children I am quite keen to try and make sure what they eat is as healthy as possible. Now when my daughter now two graduated onto cows milk when she was one I didn't really like the idea that she might be eating growth hormones given to cows to increase their milk yield. so i started buying full fat organic milk (because young children are supposed to have full fat milk) for her while the rest of us just had normal milk.

Then I got pregnant with my son and though I should be drinking organic semi-skimmed too, as he needed the best start possible also. So then I bought both kinds of milk organic and now I always do it.

If I am honest I can't really taste anything different - it's not like organic veg which often tastes a lot nicer than the other stuff - I am buying it because I believe the label and think it must be better for me and my family. I can recommend it in so far as it is perfectly good milk, tastes good, doesn't go off too quickly or not quickly enough (hmm... don't you wonder when you buy milk and it doesn't do off after a fortnight? Are they irradiating? ) Um no-one in the year or so since we switched has had any more colds, or any fewer, had nasty diseases or anything. No-one has cancer. But then, we are not especially high risk anyway.

So really and truly it's milk. But I trust Sainsbury's because what is the option, frankly? If they say it's organic then I guess it is. And if it isn't, well I'm only being duped for a few pence, so I'll not sue!

If you buy it in 4 pint cartons it works out to 73p a litre. Normal milk in Sainsbury's is 59p a litre in a 4 pint carton. So yes, it's more expensive, but then I only buy 2 x 4 pint cartons about every five days or so, so the extra expense is only about a pound a month more on milk than if I didn't buy it. That's buying me peace of mind.

Summary: If it does what it says on the label then I'm happy!

I'm not an expert on organic food, but apparently organic milk is one of the few products that really is better for you than the non organic version
