Advantages: Lots of flavours and few calories

Disadvantages: None unless you don't like salad

A lot of people think of salad as dull and tasteless. That's because most associate it with a floppy lettuce or the crunchy iceberg variety. Well I haven't bought a bog standard lettuce for years because I often found it in my fridge at the bottom of my salad box, brown and half-eaten. However I regularly buy a bag of salad which my mother along with many others call "millionaire's salad" because they think it costs the earth. My argument is that to get the taste, you need variety and if I were to buy all the ingredients to make a tasty salad I would pay more. I've tried lots of salad bags over the year from various supermarkets but the one I actually love is Sainsbury's Herb Salad.

***Ingredients***
The 120 gram bag contains baby lollo rosso, baby cos, rocket, coriander and parsley. It's the combination of the tender baby leaves with strong and fragrant herbs that make this salad a success. Baby lollo rosso has a slightly buttery flavour whilst the baby cos is crisp and juicy and has a mild flavour. For me the selection of herbs makes this a winning partnership. Coriander is one of my favourite herbs and gives the salad a hint of Middle Eastern food and reminds me of my favourite Thai restaurant. It's pungent, nutty flavour works really well with a lime dressing.

In contrast to the cos and lollo rosso, rocket with its fully bodied leafy flavour has guts. It is fiery, peppery and gives the salad a kick. And finally parsley another strong flavoured and aromatic herb makes up this wonderful bag.

***Looking Good***
As well as tasting good, the combination is visually pleasing. We have the rosso with its frilly cherry red leaves and the rocket with its curvy green. Add to that the parsley flowers and it looks good enough on its own.

***Other Uses***
As well as using the herb salad as a salad, I often add it to home made soups. It freezes very well too. I add any frozen ingredients a few minutes before I serve the soup. Again this particular selection adds a pungent taste to the dish. It works well in omelette too. I finely chopped a handful of the ingredients to my beaten eggs. The bag itself contains a recipe. This is currently one for Mexican wraps.

***Overall***
The cost of the bag is £1.59, which I think is money well, spent. It's a versatile assortment and because it can survive life in the freezer, there is no waste. It is tasty enough to have on its own and adds flavour to sandwiches. I like it with a little balsamic vinegar too. It has a distinctive flavour to any other salad I've tried. The mixture of bold and mild, sweetness and bitterness makes this one fragrant, colourful and interesting salad.

I love salad but prefer to make my own! I don't buy pre washed salads unless they have been washed in water with no chemicals! Ann

Not really a salad fan, wish I was more healthy than the stuff I eat.
