Advantages: Good value for money and really tasty.
Disadvantages: It's seasonal so not around long.
I had to have a tooth pulled out on Monday so I needed to stock up on soft food such as soup and so I sent the other half to Sainsbury’s for supplies. He returned triumphantly with several “tubs” of Sainsbury’s own brand fresh soup including a really delicious looking “Spiced Pumpkin” flavour, (its autumn’s soup of the season). I was chuffed because I’d seen the adverts for “New Covent Garden’s pumpkin soup and I really fancied it.
~~~*~~~ The (Controversial) Packaging Bit ~~~*~~~
(People either seem to have varying opinions on packaging descriptions – I like them personally, but if you don’t just skip this bit, I won’t mind at all).
Sainsbury’s soups come in cool, clear plastic tubs with screw off lids which makes them quite useful when they’re empty, (I’d been looking for something to keep home-made soup in and these hold a pint so they are perfect). It’s a good thing that they are re-useable mind because as yet they are not recyclable, (from the label it appears that Sainsbury’s are trying to rectify this).
Other than that the packaging is fairly standard with the label displaying a picture of a pumpkin and some spices and the normal stuff such as claims of “low fat”, the nutritional information and the fairly useful colour coded wheel showing how “Healthy” the soup is.
~~~*~~~ Nutritional Information ~~~*~~~
For those of you who’ll want to know the soup scores green for everything apart from salt, (it contains 12.5% of the RDA per half a bottle). The soup is suitable for vegetarians but not vegans and is also suitable for coeliacs.
~~~*~~~ The Soup ~~~*~~~
This soup is a bit of a weird muddy yellow colour which isn’t the most appetising colour in the world. Luckily it smells amazing; a really hearty, savoury smell. You can defiantly smell pumpkin, onion and oregano which really gets my mouth watering.
The soup isn’t too thick which is a good thing as sometimes they are more like a vegetable puree than a soup. It has a really smooth texture with no chunky bits at all which was particularly good for me!
As for taste I think it is gorgeous; obviously if you don’t like pumpkin or soup you won’t enjoy it but it is a really rich taste. You can easily make out the flavour of pumpkin, carrot, garlic, onion and seasonings which all blend together perfectly. I think with a vegetable like pumpkin, which has quite a delicate flavour on it’s own, that the other flavours in the soup enhance it rather than over power it; a balance that is achieved here.
The bottle suggests that it will serve 2 people, giving 2 ½ pint portions; for me this is fine as I don’t like too much soup and I find this soup very filling but my other half will easily eat a whole pot to himself.
~~~*~~~ Price and Availability ~~~*~~~
Obviously you can get this soup from Sainsbury’s and www.sainsburys.co.uk. Because this is a seasonal flavour it is limited so you will have to be quick if you want some. I really don’t know how often they change the seasonal flavours but I will be stocking up on this as it is easy to freeze.
This soup was £1.40 (ish), with the standard flavours being just 99p, which I think is excellent when you consider the price of some branded fresh soup.
~~~*~~~ Conclusion ~~~*~~~
Overall I think this is an excellent wintery soup which is fantastic value for money. In all fairness it would cost me about the same to make it myself and warming it the microwave is certainly a lot easier for me! Perfect with crusty bread, (especially tiger bread), and real butter.
Summary: Sainsbury's Spiced Pumkin soup of the season.
