Advantages: Very economical, very nutritious
Disadvantages: None
As a result of the credit crunch I have had recourse to try and reduce my shopping bill. One of the steps I have taken has been to switch to supermarkets own brand products. Whilst shoping in Sainsbury's i came across their own brand 'Wholegrain Fruit and Fibre'. For a 500 gram pack at only £1.29p, I thought I would give them a whirl...
The packet is a purple colour and contains quite a bit of useful information. The packaging itself uses a minimum of 85% recyled cardboard. It also states that if every Sainsbury's customer recycled their cereal box, 750 tonnes of cardboard would be re-used every year - that's the equivalent of 101 double decker buses!
The cereal is made with wholegrain wheat flakes and also contains raisins, cocnut chips, banana, apple and hazlenuts. It contains no artificial colours or flavours, that it contains wholegrain, it is high in fibre and fortified with vitamins and iron.

*The Verdict*
The cereal flakes are a good size and there is plenty of fruit mixed in with the cereal. The raisins are quite plump and juicy and there is a fair amount of other fruit. However, the fruit does tend to settle in the bottom of the pack - so do give the pack a bit of a shake before serving them out.
My opinion was that they tasted very good - very comparable with similar type branded products. There was about the right amount of flakes and fruit. However, the best test of the cereal was to give them to my daughter to try! She is very anti 'own shop brands' and is a discerning cereal eater... After trying a bowl she told me that they were 'delicious' and to get them again!
I feel that it is a healthy breakfast as it contains wholegrain, is high in fibre and is a naturally low fat food with no added salt. The cereal only contains 0.17 grams of salt per 30 gram serving and that is 'naturally occuring'.
As each pack contains approximatley 16 average servings that works out at about just 9p for each serving of cereal..... definitely an economical breakfast. I will be putting this in my trolley again next time I visit Sainsbury's!
Summary: A healthy and inexpensive cereal
