Sainsbury's Basics Potato Salad
by Qroo
I've never normally been the greatest fan of potato salad in the past, but for some reason I decided to buy a pre made tub of it from Sainsburys this week. I opted for the Sainsburys Basics Potato Salad as it was the cheapest (56p) and it looked reasonably good.
It comes in a see through plastic tub that is 12cm in diameter at ... the top and 9cm in diameter at the bottom. The top of the tub comes of to let you scoop the potato salad out of the tub. Around the tub is the label, which is printed directly onto the plastic. It comes in the characteristic orange colours of the rest of the Sainsburys basics range and therefore it is easy to spot. There is not very much that is interesting about the tub, apart from that it holds 500g of potato salad and it costs 56p per tub.
As I only opened this on the day before the best before date, my judgement of the product may be slightly skewed as due to it being an egg based product, the mayonnaise may of gone off a little. On opening the tub, there is a strong aroma of the onions and chives that has been added and the product looks white with a slightly lumpy texture. There is a lot of noticeable pieces of potato in the salad, which is very nice. The chunks of potato are about 1cm cubes, which is about the right size in my opinion as it saves cutting it up when eating.
The potato salad has a strong and noticeable taste of onions and chives which I found masked the taste of the mayonnaise a bit. It is not too strong though as it doesn't make it off putting. In every spoonful I got at least one piece of potato which was nice as for a own brand product, as I didn't expect much potato. The mayonnaise is not too runny at all, which makes it look nice on a plate and makes it easy to eat with a spoon or fork.
After being open for a day, mine had reached its best before date, which was very noticeable in the appearance of the product. Overnight, the mayonnaise had turned quite lumpy, which made it very unappealing and appeared to of gone off, so I threw it away.
Health wise, it isn't too bad per fifth of a pot. It contains 164 calories, 12.5g of fat, 0.5g of salt and 1.1g of sugar. The fat and salt levels are reasonably high, but for an own brand value product I expected this. As a lunch or dinner accompaniment it is very nice and can make a change from salads or baked beans!
The downside to it is the high fat content and the rapid rate that mine went off. This may be due to it containing egg and not being in the most air tight tub. However I would recommend using it in one day if possible.
Overall, I am going to give this 3/5 as it is a nice potato salad, but the high fat content and the speed at which is went off does not suit me as I don't want to eat a lot of fat and I definitely could not eat a whole tub in one day!
Thanks for reading.

Sainsbury's Fresh Cream Apple Turnover
by caz-3124
I recently reviewed the Sainsbury's Egg Custard Tart Desserts and amongst that range of desserts is the 2 Bramley Apple Turnovers.
Sainsbury's do a range of these kinds of desserts varying from chocolate, fruit and cream and often a combination of these. I have tried quite a few from their Desserts range and so far so good. ...
This one is appropriately packaged in a light green box with window. Inside is a plastic tray holding the puffs. I think they have updated the packaging slightly from the transparent box in the picture so that it fits in with the rest of their Dessert range rather than being a Bakery item I suspect. Each puff contains 285 calories. This will cost you about £1.39.
My first thought was that I was pleasantly surprised by the size of each turnover. It is triangularly shaped, and roughly half the size of a sandwich. It is also quite nicely filled with a mixture of whipped cream, chunks of Bramley apple and apple sauce. This is contained by a light and flaky pastry shell which is coated in little sugar granules similar to the manner of a cream horn.
I really like these, the apply is zingy and contrasts with the tanginess of the apple chunks which feel solid and not like the apple much you get in some brands of turnover. I also enjoy the contrasts of the soft cream, crunchier apple against the softness of the pastry but crunchiness of the sugar coating. These are simple, but very tasty indeed. Sainsbury's Smoked Salmon & Watercress Quiche
by jojo8948
I bought this on Monday but didn't get round to eating it until last night, luckily it was still in date. I don't usually buy ready made quiches because of fat content plus I like to try an make my own, but I knew we were going to have a busy week and would need some speedy food.
This quiche usually costs £2.79 but it was on ... offer when I got it for £2.00, so I thought it was a good saving.
The quiche comes in a foil tray, inside a cardboard box with a little plastic window. This annoys me a bit, as I don't really need to look at the quiche, I'd rather be able to recycle the box.
The information on the box states that each third of a quiche provides... cal 406, fat 30.1g sat fat 17.6g, salt 1.40g, total sugars 3.3g. That is a huge amount of fat, for a third of a quiche, but I don't plan on eating it too regularly so I'm not hugely bothered.
The first thing I noticed about the quiche when I got it out was the shape, I was fully expecting it to be round, but it was like a flower shape with curvy edges, it looked really nice, and it made a change to boring normal round quiche.
To cook this it says to take it out of the foil and place in the oven on about 180degrees for 25 minutes, you can also cook it from frozen but it takes longer.
After the allotted time the quiche looked lovely and golden brown, and the pastry looked nice and crusty. I cut it into four and we ate it quite quickly afterwards, as I can't stand cold food, and cold quiche is pretty disgusting to me, but you could eat it colder.
The texture of the quiche was really soft, and not at all rubbery, which was great, there was loads of watercress in there not a huge amount of salmon but a fair few small chunks. The quiche was quite creamy tasting and very fishy due to the salmon, but I really enjoyed it. The salmon chunks were well cooked and a lovely pale pink colour, my only criticism was that there wasn't a few more chunks in there. The pastry was buttery and crusty but melted in the mouth, and was clearly good quality.
I really enjoyed this quiche and I would buy it again. I think there could be a bit more salmon, but it was very tasty and for £2.00 for convenience you can't really argue. Read the complete review |
