Sainsburys jaffa cakes are a replica of the more expensive brand. They concist of a sponge base which is light and fluffy but ever so slightly dryer than other brands but not that dry that it ruins the taste, this is topped with a slice of orange jelly which is soft, squidgy and slimy with a realy strong bitter orange taste, to top all of this off you have a thick layer of dark chocolate. Sainsburys jaffa cakes are realy good value for money if you dont mind a slightly dryer layer of cake on the bottom of your jaffa cake as this is the only difference i have found, they are just as tasty as other brands but cheaper. They come packaged in ... Read the complete review

Recently I have had my hours at work cut by half due to the credit crunch so I needed to cut back at least in the short term on all my expenditure. So on my weekly shop to Sainsbury's I was keen to see how if at all I could reduce my bill. I came across the Sainsbury's basics 24 Jaffa Cakes next to my usual brand of Jaffa Cakes and immediately noticed a potential cost saving. As these Sainsbury's ones were only 60p, so I decided they needed to be tried. Sadly I have always loved Jaffa cakes since being a young boy, but in those days we only at them as special treats on Birthday's or when we had visitors for tea. I have tried a few of ... For those that are unaware, Jaffa Cakes are a low fat (on average 1 gram of fat per cake) confectionary item that is composed of a semi-soft sponge base which supports a sweet orange gelatine and is finally topped with a layer of milk/dark chocolate. Suffice to say, each one is an absolute delight. When I played rugby at University, it was often a chore to find a snack that was high in sugar but low in fat whilst also being cheap given our student status. Cue Sainsbury's basics jaffa cakes. These things, as I pointed out, are roundabout 1 gram of fat per cake whilst packed full of energy filled sugar which was great for such a vain bunch of men; and meant we ... I bought a packet of these Sainsburys Basics Jaffa Cakes this morning to sample as I have already tried the Tesco Value ones. The price of McVities Jaffa Cakes is going through the roof at the moment, so at just 60p for 24 biscuits (or are they cakes, I shall leave you to ponder that one!) this was a hefty enough saving for me to try them despite not being overly keen on a lot of the cheap Jaffa Cakes. The main difference between these and the McVities brand is the fact that these are noticably drier, not enough to spoil them completely but if I'm honest I wasn't keen on the dryness in these as it absolutely changed the experience of eating a Jaffa Cake. I'm ... Read the complete review

I purchased this packet of 24 of Sainsburys Basics Jaffa Cakes for just 60p which is the long term price and one that I just couldn't resist, even on my limited budget. The packaging is very basic; a cardboard box with orange writing, nutritional information, company information, barcode etc and the best before date is several months away although there is no danger of them lasting that long with me around! Each jaffa cake contains 42 calories and 1g fat per jaffa cake so they actually have 4 calories less than the 'real' version and they appear to be an identical size. These jaffa cakes have been wrapped up in 12 and I always find that ... Read the complete review
