Advantages: A tasty meal when hot
Disadvantages: Not too good eaten cold
A savoury quiche is a fairly easy dish to make but as soon as the idea pops into my head it pops back out again. Ready made quiches aren't expensive and are quite versatile. Serve them with a salad, or chips, a jacket potato goes very well with a slice of quiche and for any special occasions they make good party food.
Sainsbury have had an offer running on this product, buy two for £3, usually they are £1.84 each so there is a good saving to be made.
Sainsbury have packaged the quiche inside of a thin cardboard box. On the front of the box the golden quiche poses cheekily on a wooden table, minus a slice just to show you what an attractive proposition it is.
Sainsbury have added their name to the box inside of a purple rectangle and the nutritional values are clearly marked, as is the sell by date.
The Quiche Lorraine has been cooked in a tin foil tray and if you are going to eat it hot then this tray can be put into the oven. Sainsbury recommend heating the quiche for 25 minutes at a temperature of 190C.
Of course it can also be eaten cold too.
A third of the Quiche contains 342 calories and although it is high in protein it is also high in fats and saturated fats.
When the cold Quiche stares you in the eye it seems to have very little going for it, all around the rim the pastry has been crimped professionally to attract admirers. The cold filling looks stodgy and unappealing, on the surface the Quiche has been `browned off` well and small pieces of bacon bob in and out among the egg mixture.
The unheated Quiche leaves me cold, no aroma, little appeal, a slab of pastry and egg in a tinfoil tray. OH That sounds harsh!
But wait...there's more...
Heat the Quiche and things look altogether different, as you take the hot dish from the oven the glorious smell of smoked bacon makes you drool!
The dull as dish water Quiche has been transformed, the ugly duckling has become a swan!
Take the knife and cut a slice, the blade slides easily through the crumbly short pastry leaving buttery crumbs in its wake.
The hot egg filling has come to life and takes on a new dimension. Where the already golden surface has been reheated there are tiny drops of cheesy oil bubbling away.
Fill your fork and let the Quiche speak for itself, the egg mixture tastes rich creamy and cheesy, the hot smoked bacon pieces are plentiful and full flavoured. The hot shortcrust pastry falls apart in your mouth, even the pastry on the bottom of the Quiche is delectable and there is the merest hint of mustard there somewhere.
I am a fan of ready made Quiches as you might have gathered!
If anyone were to ask me I would willingly recommend Sainsbury`s Quiche Lorraine. But I would tell them that the dish is far more interesting if it is eaten when it is hot, the cold Quiche looks like a slab of rubber sitting in tin foil.
Sorry Sainsbury`s, I am only being honest.
Summary: Heat it up and treat yourself
