Advantages: Great on Fish and chips
Disadvantages: Not so sure about the others
Good old Sarson's, we all know the brand and we all know what we use it for. Well lets face it fish and chips just wouldn't be the same without Salt and Vinegar.
Sarson's vinegar comes in that distinctive bottle that we all recognise. A medium size clear glass bottle with the well known Sarson's label at the top. It now comes with a flip lid and under that a little hole to make sure to don't tip too much all over your chips! The last time I bought a bottle of Sarson's it cost 39p.
Today we still use vinegar, after it was discovered 10.000 years ago, by mistake.
The word vinegar derives from the french word vinaigre which means sour wine.
Today it is produced by the fermentation of sugar to alcohol and then a secondary fermentation to form vinegar.
Apart from fish and chips and maybe mixing ready made mint sauce, and perhaps cooking. Theres not alot we can use it for. Or is there?
I have found some interesting and unusual ways to use vinegar. Some I have tested myself and some not.
Cut flowers
--------------
Add two teaspoons of vinegar and three teaspoons of sugar to the water of your flowers and they will last longer.
Stains on concrete
------------------------
Pour undiluted vinegar on the stains, then leave overnight. Rinse with a hosepipe. Removes most stains.
Ice remover
---------------
Icey windscreens in winter. Keep a spray bottle with vinegar in it. When you have an iced up windscreen just spray it and watch the ice melt away.
Grass killer
---------------
Any grass you have growing where you don't want it, for example between patio slabs and on drive ways. Just pour hot vinegar on daily for the three days. Hey presto, no more grass. Thats got to beat chemicals.
Bar-b-q's
-----------
Clean bar-b-q grills with pure vinegar before hot soapy water and see how easy they are to clean the next time.
The vinegar stops the grease sticking.
Microwaves
---------------
Boil one cup of water with a 1/4 of vinegar in the microwave. As this heats it will loosen grease and food so you can wipe it clean. It also deodorises your microwave.
Fridges
---------
Wash your fridge with half water half vinegar, again it deodorizes as well as cleans.
Plug Holes
--------------
Are you plugs holes too slow ? Try a handful of baking soda and half a cup vinegar. you may need to repeat this for two or three days, but it does work.
Recycling
------------
If you have trouble rinsing jars and bottles before you recycle, rinse them with hot water and vinegar, this works on the worst like mayonaise and peanut butter. It not only cleans them but they smell fresh too.
Stainless steel
-------------------
Dampen a cloth with vinegar. Great for stainless steel areas on cookers and cooker hoods as well as saucepans.
Fruitstains on worktops
------------------------------
Use vinegar undiluted on worktops to remove fruitstains.
Onion odour
---------------
Rinse you hands or pan or container to remove onion odour.
Itchy skin!
------------
Now let me tell you I have not tried this and if I had the need would not! If you have itchy burny skin caused by haemorrhoids use a cotton ball dabbed with vinegar apply to the affected area. If you find this too uncomfortable try using a solution of half vinegar and half water. Ouch.
Varicose veins
------------------
Try a dab of vinegar on your veins to relieve pain and swelling.
Athletes foot
----------------
Try soaking your foot in vinegar, this not only softens the skin but kills the bacteria that causes it.
Brittle nails
--------------
Soaking your nails in vinegar for as little as five minutes a day will help cure brittle nails.
Age spots
------------
Use vinegar with equal parts of onion juice. Dab it on daily, it may take a few weeks to work, but its got to cheaper than shop bought remedies. But oh dear I couldn't stand the smell.
Corns and calluses
------------------------
Soak a piece of cloth in vinegar then cover the affected and leave overnight ( easier said than done ) Use this for a few consequetive nights !!!! Then the corns or calluses should just peel off..... This has got to be the ultimate passion killer.
Sore throat
----------------
One teaspoon of vinegar to a glass of water. Gargle. Yuk.
Deodorant
--------------
This has got to be a classic. If you are looking for a natural deodorant wash under your arms in the shower with vinegar to neutralize your bodies' natural ph balance. You can use this in shower without making a mess! All I can think about is what the girls I work with would say. Lovely vinegar fragrance. Oh please, Thats got to be on a desert island with nothing but a bottle of Sarson's.
Head lice
------------
Warm vinegar on the hair, and dip the nit comb in vinegar then through the hair. Very old fashioned. I think that shop bought remedies these days have got to be kinder and more affective. Do we really want to send our kids to school with the destinct smell of vinegar on their hair?
Bruises
----------
A mixture of half vinegar and half water, dab with cottonwool held over a bruise for a couple of minutes will ease a bruise.
Hiccups
---------
One teaspoon of vinegar to a cup of water, drink this, it will cure your hiccups in no time. I really cannot try this, I know I will be sick. Its much easier to hold your breath or sip water.
Muscle cramps
------------------
These are caused by low levels of potassium, soak a flannel in vinegar and rub the affected area, this should relieve the cramp quickly.
Laundry
----------
Vinegar has many uses , grass stains soak the affected area overnight, then wash as normal. For clean smelling nappies add a cup of vinegar to your wash. For clothes that smell of petrol of petrol again a cup of vinegar to your wash.
For wine stains and deodorant marks dab with vinegar, leave for an hour or so then wash as normal.
Thanks for reading.
Summary: May be safer on your chips
