Advantages: Yummy affordable ice creams

Disadvantages: Gum at bottom not suitable for young children, may be too sweet for some

Ahh it's summer time, the sun is shining, the sky is blue (well at least where I am it is) and I have the perfect excuse to indulge in wonderfully naughty snacks and ice creams. While I will occasionally pretend to be grown up I can't help but love the kiddies ice cream treats, one of my favourites being Screwballs. Screwballs have been around since I was a little girl, you could get them from the ice cream man or the shops, it didn't matter where, just as long as you were presented with the joy that was a yummy ice cream treat with a little surprise at the bottom.

Screwballs are essentially raspberry ripple ice creams presented in a plastic cone with a cardboard lid, as you peel off the lid you see the vanilla ice cream swirling towards the base of the container with the raspberry sauce creating a whirlpool like pattern through the centre, at the bottom of each Screwball is a small traditional bubble gum, you know the marble like ones that we were forced to have as kids instead of proper chewing gum. Occasionally if you had a generous ice cream man you could get added vanilla ice cream and a flake but you can't buy Screwballs like this from the shop, or at least as far as I'm aware.

The flavour of Screwballs is very much that of traditional raspberry ripple, the vanilla ice cream being smooth and creamy while the raspberry sauce provides a bit of a fruity tang, it's not a fancy designer ice cream and you wont find bits of vanilla pod or fruit seeds in it, after all it's designed for kids, it is very sweet tasting and can be a bit too sweet for those lacking a sweet tooth, the bubble gum at the bottom gives that little added incentive to finish the ice cream and while initially it is slightly having been kept in the freezer, with a little chewing you get a pleasant sweet chewing gum, although it is the type that only remains tasty and chewy for about 5 minutes before you want to spit it out. They are very enjoyable on a hot sunny day and you also don't have to worry about soggy cones or melting ice cream dripping down your hand because it's all kept within that handy plastic cone.

A single screwball would usually set you back at least £1 from an ice cream man however most supermarkets have them, usually in boxes of 4 or 6, Iceland and Asda for example sell them for £1 a box, bargain! Screwballs are suitable for vegetarians, free from artificial colours, preservatives and flavours, they do however contain milk and wont be suitable for those who are lactose intolerant or suffer milk allergies.

I absolutely adore screwballs and keep a selection in my freezer just in case I fancy one, of course the kids do get at least a sniff of them too! Both Christopher and Elsa love them and often find them easier to cope with because the ice cream doesn't drip making their fingers sticky, usually with a traditional coned ice cream Elsa will get in quite a mess and abandon the cone but with Screwballs she's happy to eat the whole lot, I do monitor them with the ice creams though as I feel they are a little young for the gum at the moment and fortunately so far they're not noticed it nestled at the bottom, of course it's only a matter of time before they do at which point I'll undoubtedly have more of a fight on my hands to get the gum away from them, but for now all is good.

I can highly recommend them as a treat for both kids and adults alike, they taste great, are good fun and are brilliantly affordable.

Summary: A perfect summer treat

Oh wow, I remember these. They were a huge hit in our neighborhood when the ice cream man started carrying them. Hmm, come to think of it, I don't know if you folks have ice cream men! Small business, individual drives around neighborhoods selling ice cream from a little window in his van with pictures of the varieties along the side. Funny how that never comes up in coversation lol.

I didn't care much for this novelty ice cream, but there were so many to choose from! Excellent review, enjoyable and informative.

U wishing you laughter
