Advantages: taste great, can vary the flavours, cheaper than shop bought

Disadvantages: time consuming

I love naan bread, and when I saw this packet mix to make your own, I decided to give it a go.

The mix comes in a purple paper packet, and the back has clear instructions on how to make the naan breads. The only other thing you need to add is warm water, although there are also instructions on the packet advising how you can vary the bread to your own taste and make either garlic and coriander flavour, or tomato flavour naan. Given my absolute love of coriander (I put it in everything I possibly can!), I decided to try the garlic and coriander version.

To start you simply need to mix the contents of the packet mix with the warm water (it must be warm to activate the yeast). You can mix either by hand or in a mixer, and being the lazy thing that I am, I put it in the food processor. The mix came together very quickly to form a slightly sticky dough.

You must then rest the dough on a floured surface for 10 minutes. If you are planning to add garlic and coriander then do it at this stage. You then knead for one minute, before shaping the bread into five tear drop shapes and leaving for another 20 minutes to rest.

I made a bit of a mistake when shaping the bread. It said on the pack to use a rolling pin, but I flattened them with my hands and I made them as thick as you would expect a naan bread to be, obviously not taking into consideration that they contain yeast and would rise!! This was my own fault for not reading the instructions properly and it lead me to have very thick naan breads, but never mind, I'll know better next time!

Once they have rested, you simply need to grill them for a couple of minutes each side until they're golden brown. It also states to brush them with melted butter before serving, but in the interests of my already too fat thighs, I decided to miss this last step out!

The naan breads tasted absolutely delicious. Despite being quite thick, they were lovely - they had a fabulous texture, just the right dough-iness to them, and made a fabulous accompaniment to the Rogan Josh me and my friend were having. To be honest, I'd go as far as saying they tasted nicer than shop-bought naan (there's modesty for you!) because they had a sort of fresher taste to them, and there was no going hard round the edges or anything like that.

One 325g packet of mix will make 5 naan breads or 12 mini naans.

A pack of this mix costs just 75p from ASDA. Given that you get 5 naan breads out of one pack, this is actually excellent value, especially when you consider that a pack of just 2 of ASDA's own brand naans cost £0.68

Overall, I was very pleased with this mix, and will definitely buy a couple more next time I do an online shop. The bread was very easy to make and good value for money too. A fab product, well done Sharwoods.

Summary: Brilliant - I'd certainly recommend giving it a try
