Advantages: Tasty, quite healthy
Disadvantages: None
My two eldest children have just recently discovered Shreddies and are loving them, I have bought two 500g boxes in one week, and I paid £2.29 for them in Sainsburys. Shreddies are a wholegrain malted wheat cereal from Nestle. You may have noticed the current advertising campaign where the Shreddies "are knitted by nanas". I do not know if it was the advertising campaign or just boredom with their usual cereal that persuaded my eldest to ask me to buy Shreddies.
The Shreddies themselves are little rectangles of malted wheat, they do actually look like they have been knitted or resemble little squares of mesh. They are a brown colour, they do not look very appetizing but they taste quite good. My children seem to really like them and I have tried them and whilst they would not be my first choice for cereal, if there was nothing else available I would eat them quite happily. We usually eat Shredded Wheat or Rice Krispies and I think the children just wanted a little change from the Shredded Wheat. The taste is quite wheaty but sweeter that Shredded Wheat and a little malty.
My children have a bowl of Shreddies for breakfast with cold milk and a little sugar, I think adults would probably eat them without the extra sugar because they are quite sweet. The ingredients are listed as Whole grain wheat (94%), sugar, barley malty extract, and salt. There is a whole list of information about the nutritional content etc on the side of the pack and more information on Shreddies and other Nestle cereals can be found at www.nestlecereals.co.uk
In our home Shreddies have also become a popular bedtime snack and very often my children will ask for some Shreddies to eat dry without milk or sugar, they just eat them like crisps. My ten month old baby has even been eating Shreddies dry in his hand. Shreddies are also available as Coco Shreddies and Honey Shreddies, we haven't tried these other flavours, I think you can also get Frosted Shreddies but there is no information about these on the packet, although I am sure I have seen them in the shops.
Overall Shreddies have proved a definite hit with my children, I think they are marginally healthier than other cereals aimed at children and they are a good source of fibre.
Will appear on other sites.
Summary: A tasty wholegrain breakfast cereal
