Advantages: Tasty, low in fat, filling

Disadvantages: None!

I'm still researching the best cereal on the market and one of my recent purchases (again in Sainsbury's) was a 45g (single serving box) of these. I love the adverts but it struck me that at almost 35 years old I can't actually think of a time I've ever had these. Growing up my mum always bought me ready brek and then converted to shops own stuff as I got older to save pennies so these I was quite excited to try..sadly... I really do need to get a life so I do!

The Packaging...

Bright blue box with a picture on the front of shreddies sat on a spoon with milk. In white, yellow and red writing I'm told they are Nestle Shreddies 'Delicious Crispy Squares With A Sweet, Malty Taste'. At the top of the box I'm told they contain 158 calories per 45g serving, and are whole grain guaranteed. On the top of the box the best before date is stamped on and the recycle symbol is displayed. Other information on the box includes size (again), ingredients and allergy advice is given, nutritional information is listed, contact details for Nestle are given, the Vegetarian symbol is displayed and finally there is a bar-code on there. Nice enough bright appealing box this is in my humble opinion!

The Cereal Itself....

Small squares of whole grain wheat made up of lines that are well formed, not to thick (but certainly not totally flat) with little holes in them which actually help absorb some milk (if you choose to use it) making them softer. Dry, well they are crispy but add milk and they do slightly soften but what did impress me is they still held their crunch well and they didn't scum up into a soggy mess in my bowl.

All that these contain is wheat, sugar, barley malt extract and salt. That's it they're that simple. The sugar and salt are detectable giving a ying and yang taste that is delightful and fresh and really pops the wheaty flavour out and the malty taste gives an additional natural sweetness and a tangy flavour to the whole dish.

Verdict....

A simple, filling and tasty breakfast, this is. After reading the ingredients whilst I was about to buy the box I didn't hold much hope of these exciting my taste-buds but they actually did/do and simplicity sometimes works! Also available with added honey though of course fee free to add a dollop if you wish!
