Advantages: Tastes good, fairly heathly, fills you up
Disadvantages: Can be a bit bland and so tempts you in to adding sugar!
I've always overlooked Shreddies somewhat, as they've always struck me as a fairly boring cereal. But, the other half loves them and buys them whenever they're on offer (often £2 for a 750g in Somerfield), and so I do end up eating them.
Healthwise first - Shreddies are a fairly good choice for a healthy breakfast, as they're wholegrain and low in fat, filling you up well from one bowl. However, I was surprised one morning when comparing the nutrition information bars on two cereal packs that Shreddies actually contain more sugar than Honey Nut Cornflakes - and I used to add sugar to Shreddies! I guess this added sugar makes the squares taste nice, sweet and malty, as opposed to wholegrain cardboard.
So, the taste. Well, they have a base taste of general wholegrain cereal, like bran flakes or something. But the taste is also sweet and malty, so they taste good just on their own (ie, eaten in dry handfuls from the box, yum!) or with milk. The texture is lovely - they stay crunchy throughout eating (unless you leave them and then come back to it - then you get a swelled up soggy mess a bit like cold wheatabix. Not nice...) and disintegrate nicely in the mouth without hurting.
I find that Shreddies really fill me up when I do eat them, and they taste nice enough to enjoy a small bowl with cold milk. But beware the hidden sugar, there's enough in them not to add any more!
Summary: I'll continue to steal these off of the other half...
