Advantages: Taste, Fibre, low fat, low sugar, whole grain
Disadvantages: not the greatest taste, incredibly dry
In bed with a terribly sore throat (I'm not having much luck medically this month, rather annoying as work are offering £50 to anyone who doesn't miss a day through illness during September) I've decided to treat myself to some cereal. Shreddies we're the only little box we had left after we'd feasted on the others as a snack during the day time, so it's a crushed sounding 45g of Shreddies I have. Due to not wanting to make a mess (that's my excuse and I'll stand by it) I'm going to have them dry (so if it is laryngitis or swollen glands or whatever...I'm not doing myself any favours).
Shreddies, as we all know by now are made by Grannies with sawing machines and special thread made from erm some sort of cereal (I couldn't find any ingredients on the box) which is 100% grain so we keep having Beefy tell us. Yes Botham is a living legend, but please mate, stop it with the crap commercials I'm getting sick of you despite the fact your one of our greatest cricketers of all time.
These come in a mini Shreddies box with all the normal designs of the proper large boxes, large red lettering with the products name, a spoon of the product (with milk that looks like it's trying to jump off the spoon) and a blue background with the whole grain banner that Nestle are pushing. Apparently whole grain are great for the heart, sadly I'm always cynical when someone tells me a certain food is "beneficial" as a few months later we get told it damages us in some other way. The infamous "oily Fish" or "Red Wine" that again was said to have some benefit before those clever doctors admitted it was bad for us. I live my life unhealthily so I don't care about the health benefits just the taste, if it's going to kill me, I'd like to die doing something I like (eating) rather than something annoying...like being told how to live.
Inside the box is a small bag with about a dish worth of Shreddies (sadly most of mine are Crushdies due to the fact the cereal went around the country with my mum when she went camping and the ones we've been eating today have been the left overs). Shreddies are little rectangles of multiple layered cereal that has about 4 layers of a lattice structure cereal (malt?) though they do seem be broken far too easily for my liking they do look entirely different to all the cereals on the market. As I am eating them dry I can get the full impact of their crunch and and erm...dryness (which as assumed, isn't wanting to be friendly with my throat) the taste is malty and kinda like a dry milk-less mug of Ovaltine. Hey I'm a fan of Ovaltine! (though washing up after a mug is a total pain in the arse).
Now 45g you may think to yourself isn't much, well actually when you compare it to the chocolate markets on the shelf it's actually a really similar size, though this is much more fibrous (I'm assuming that word means "has more fibre in it", as there's no red line wiggly line under it) and has a lot less fat in it. Funny I get to fat, one of the problems with eating cereal with milk is that the milk isn't particularly healthy as it's got fat in...and only freaks use fat free milk on cereal...it's worse than not using any milk. The product is infact really tasty with out milk, though I'll admit I prefer cookie crisp to these (they are just mini cookies, someone needs to give the creator a gold medal for ingenuity).
Nutritional Information (per 45g bag)
150 Calories (8%)
7g Sugars (8%)
0.8g Fat (1%)
0.2g Saturates (1%)
0.3g Salt (0%)
4.4g Fibre (18%)
On the filling scale they rank quite well maybe a 7 or an 8 with Double Deckers being a 10 for how well they fill me.
They contain 10 types of vitamins (though the actual packaging is confusing as to how much) and are suitable for vegetarians.
Overall a nice snack, maybe not suitable for those with throat infections whilst dry. The wasted (broken dust of the cereal) in the bottom of the packet does seem quite wasteful but there's little I can do about that. With a decent taste and "health" benefits the product is surely ideal, though as previously said Cookie Crisp are better.
Summary: A nice snack
