Advantages: Taste, price, reasonably healthy

Disadvantages: I put sugar on mine!

As anyone who regularly reads my reviews will know I almost always have the Tesco brand version of Weetabix for breakfast usually with some fresh fruit on it - a banana or peach for example.

There are one or two others that I like as well and occasionally have a treat. One such cereal is Nestle Shreddies. These are one of the few things that I do like to eat with a sprinkling of sugar so, being a diabetic, these have to be a rare treat for me.

I am currently indulging in a box at the moment as Dave and I have had bad colds and I am feeling a bit sorry for myself so I thought a nice treat would cheer me up!

The Box

The Shreddies box is pretty much the same as it has been for many years. It's blue with the word Nestle in white, Shreddies in red and a spoonful of Shreddies and milk. The descriptive writing tells us that Shreddies are 'delicious crispy squares with a yummy, malty taste'.

Across the top of the box is a green flash with the words Whole Grain Guaranteed and a picture of an ear of grain with a white tick. This is one of a range of Nestle cereals having this green flash showing that they are all at the healthier end of the scale of cereals. The top of the box also shows the nutritional information expressed as a percentage of recommended adult daily guideline amount.

Round the rest of the box is the detailed nutritional information, the list of ingredients, recycling information and various other bits of information about Nestle cereals including the picture of the 'nanas' that knit the Shreddies!

Inside the cardboard box the Shreddies are sealed inside a greaseproof bag.

The cardboard box is obviously recycleable and the inner bag can also be recycled where facilities exist.

Box Tops For Books

Also on every Nestle cereal box there is a token to cut out and save so that schools can get free books in exchange for the tokens. Apparently as few as 10 tokens will get a book so it is worth seeing if you can find a school that collects them.

The Cereal

Shreddies are little squares (just less than an inch across) made from layers of whole grain wheat (94.5%), sugar, barley malt extract and salt.

I have been known to eat them as they are but they are much nicer in a bowl with cold milk and, I am ashamed to say, a sprinkling of sugar - preferably brown. I can eat these without sugar but somehow the taste is so much nicer with the sugar. It is strange really as I wouldn't dream of adding sugar to Weetabix or Shredded Wheat!

The Taste

Well the taste of Shreddies is wonderful! The malty flavour compliments the chewy texture of the whole grain and you can leave them in the milk for as long as you like so that they are as soft or as crunchy as you like them.

Since the cereal is made using the whole grain it will help to keep you feeling fuller for longer as the energy is released slowly into your system.

The Nutritional Value

I will give you the nutritional value per 100g although it is worth remembering that you would eat about half that per meal but would need to add the value of whichever type of milk you chose.

Calories 351
Protein 9.9g
Carbohydrates 73.7g
Of which sugars 15.5g
Fat 1.9g
Of which saturates 0.4g
Fibre 9.8g
Salt 0.8g

Other Varieties

Shreddies can now be purchased covered in cocoa or covered in honey. Obviously these will be higher in calories than the standard version and to be honest they don't appeal to me at all. I would rather stick to the ones I know and love!

The Cost

The current prices at Tesco's are £1.96 for 500g and £2.47 for 75g so they aren't an expensive way to start the day. I don't know whether Tesco's make their own version - I must investigate next time I am shopping there.

Conclusion

As I have already said I do love Shreddies as an occasional treat. I do find that they keep my appetite at bay for a reasonable time, but most importantly I just love the taste!

Summary: An lovely occasional treat!
