Advantages: Satisfying start to the day

Disadvantages: Little bland

Shreddies have been around for years but I have to confess that I only tried them for the first time a couple of months ago. I have been buying them for my girls for sometime and they both seem to really enjoy them. They go through real phases with the cereals they want to eat, they tend to eat one for weeks and then suddenly claim that they don't like it anymore. I always have a box of Shreddies in the cupboard though and they have become my trusty fall back.

They were great when my youngest daughter was just getting to grips with feeding herself, she seemed to manage to get one on her spoon and if all else failed, she could just use her fingers

A couple of months ago, I was feeling a bit unsure of what I fancied for breakfast and my eyes were drawn to the Shreddies, I thought I might as well give them ago. I tipped quite a small portion into my bowl and added some milk from straight out of the fridge.

I wasn't expecting a whole lot, to be honest I expected them to taste a whole lot like cardboard but do you know what, they tasted a whole lot better than I had expected. They were sweeter than I had imagined, although not too sweet and I really enjoyed the crunchy texture against the chilled milk. They just tasted quite wholesome and I actually found them incredibly satisfying. Now they are not the most interesting of cereals but I have since tried adding fresh fruit to a bowl and this does make them much more enjoyable. After eating a medium sized bowlful I did feel rather full uo and felt no need to have anything else for my breakfast.

Now I ate my bowl up in record speed, but I do know from my daughters lengthy breakfasts that the shreddies can go a little soggy in the milk if they are left too long. I paid approx £1.96 for 500g from my local Tescos.

Summary: A good solid breakfast cereal
