Advantages: Texture goes well with milk

Disadvantages: None

We had French lessons at my primary school and these were led by an eccentric French Lady, Madame B_. I really loved her lessons because she was madly enthusiastic and, if you answered one of her questions right, she would plunge her hand into a big box of Shreddies and pull out a handful and give them to you. I adored being able to munch the dry Shreddies and was desperate to answer the questions right. I think, therefore, that I have a sort of Pavlovs' dog thing going on with Shreddies; Shreddies will always be a kind of reward!

Packaging
-------------

It is clear that Shreddies have been going strong a long time. Also, that most children seem to like them (everyone in my class did!). It is difficult when looking at the packaging to clearly see who the target audience is. There seems to be a 'Superman' thing going on with the blue background and the red bendy font. Perhaps it is indeed aimed at slightly older children - those who might like a superhero.

Ingredients and Nutritional Info
----------------------------------------

Whole Grain Wheat (94.5%), Sugar, Barley Malt Extract, Salt, Vitamins and Minerals: Niacin, Pantothenic Acid, Vitamin B6, Thiamin (B1), Riboflavin (B2), Folic Acid (Folacin), Biotin, Vitamin D, Vitamin B12 and Iron

This cereal is suitable for vegetarians (vegans also it seems).

Shreddies are well fortified with some important vitamins and minerals. Generally, a portion will provide around 25 - 80% RDA of individual elements. However RDAs seem, from my research, to be quite low and not aimed at optimum nutrition. I suppose it's important not to live soley off a diet of cereal!

There are 925 calories per portion (with milk), 2.9g of fat and 0.5g of salt.

Taste and Texture
-----------------------

Needless to say, I still enjoy eating them on their own out of the packet - especially if I am newly home from work and am on a bit of a munching session. They are substantial and very dry and crunchy. The criss-cross (knitted) texture of them goes very well with milk, allowing the milk to seep into each individual cereal piece. Shreddies seem to then take on a pleasingly satisfactory place on the scale of cereal soggyness - neither too sof t or too hard. Sprinkled with sugar, as I do, they can be shovelled down quite speedily.

Price
------

At Tesco, a 500g box costs £1.96 and a 750g box costs £2.47. I think they are quite reasonably priced.

To Conclude
---------------

The advertising campaign 'knitted by nanas' is a little annoying - but then maybe I am not meant to be moved by it (possibly for older kids again). I do like this cereal though and I will, now and again buy it and eat it out of the packet!

Summary: Not really knitted by grandmere

I always wondered about that advertising campaign - itsn't it against the advertising standards rules to tell fibs? :-)
